the government can make all the legislation it wants but in the end no legislation will protect one from their own stupidity..... words from my own grandfather....... it means everyone just use their heads!!!!
i think we all need yet another law as bad as we need a hole in the head.
what ever happened to an adult being responsible for their own actions?
honestly the guy that injures himself pays taxes as well folks so dont give me the revenue argument, if your a good honest tax paying citizen then you should retain your right as an adult in this supposedly free country we call canada.
if the granola crunching sandal wearing liberals need a new law i just ask they dont screw with the pastimes i enjoy...........
i keep PFD's in my boat, i use them, but i dont need a fine associated with them.......
just wishing it was still the good old days when folks were responsible for themselves.
cheers lads.

I currently wear a pfd while operating my boat.
When I am anchored or drifting I will remove it. I always wear it when I am running Superior, Huron or St Mary's River or with my kids(I tether myslef to the killswitch when with the kids too)
Here is why
People believe they know the waterways to well and trust that there are no new dangers since there last passage. A deadhead can toss you out of a boat quite easily and should you hit your head on the way out, or break a limb etc on the way in, your ability to swim/ tread water will be greatly reduced or non existant.
Futhermore, on my lifejacket I have a few survival items. Waterproof matches, whistle, little jackknife, wool touque! Should I not get rescued immediately, I have the very basics that may mean the difference between life and death. Lifejackets are very warm when thats all you got! Swimming with a PFD on is quite easy...either kick or use your arms...You can tread water for a long time with a PFD on.
Having some experience in SAR I can tell you that spotting a lifejacket from a spotters seat in a Herc is alot easier then plain clothes.
God forbid anyone dies outthere but here is a general idea of what goes on when a boater goes missing
A call comes into the OPP/City Police
They notify CFB Trenton (Military)
The police dispatch cruisers, boats, sar manpower, support vehicles
atvs, helicopters, scene commanders, fire depts, mnr etc (your $$$$$ at work)
All these people have to eat, may need accomdations, travel etc. All the vehicles need fuel/breakdowns etc
CFB Trenton dispatches a Herc Spotter plane and a helicopter to the area
(your $$$$ at work)
If there is a volunteer SAR organization in the area they too will be dispatched. Although they are volunteers and there time is not paid, there is still great costs associated in running these organizations
The police/trenton will begin a water search aswell as a perimeter search of the lake. In search of the boat, people, desbris, basically anything they can to have a starting point.
If they are unsuccessful at locating anyone on the surface, they will dispatch a USRU team. Specially trained police officers who will comb the depths of the lake until your body is found or the search area has been exhausted. This could go one for days and days$$$
So once your body is found, then a coroner is disopatched to confirm the death (legality)$$$ An autopsy is done($) and so forth goes the funeral etc $
Each case is totally different, but you can easily see how quickly the $$$ adds up.
Will a lifejacket completely stop these incidents from happening...Of course not. (People in seatbelts still die too) Will it reduce the number of drownings on our lakes...for sure
My long 2 cents

Ya, but that's not a problem related to whether someone wears a life jacket or not (SAR etc. are called whether or not the person has a life jacket). The problem here is the over reaction of gov't. by sending an battallion of high paid gov't employees for a simple man overboard.
We had the local fair in Chesterville here a few weeks ago. I know some of the fair organizers and apparently this year the fair board was obligated by law to have 10 police officers present for the fair dance. This is a licenced dance that may attract a few hundred people. The fair board had to pay over $3k to hire the officers, who stood around all night overseeing the dance. So much for the fair dance being a money generating event. If someone has some extra cash, there will be a gov't agency creating a new law that enables them to get to that cash....gauranteed. This is what over-regulation does.
Back to lif jackets.....you're making the arguement for us. On top of all the tax-payer cost, now we have to have a legal team and more gov't employees to enact a new law and administer it. Big buxxx!!!!!
Finally, why stop at life jackets....let's make it mandatory to take a course and get a licence to own steak knives. How many victims have been stabbed?
Let's make it mandatory to take a course and get a licence to operate a gas BBQ
Etc, etc, etc. the list could go on and on.
Are you left-leaning, bicycle riding, Berkenstock wearing, flag waving, bespectacled liberal morons getting the message that we are already over-regulated???

well im on both sides of the fence. My father was killed on the st.lawrence river not wearing a pfd, it was a 95 mph race boat that he flipped in the begining of april. however i fish 3 times a week and i dont like to wear it at all which drives my mother crazy. I like the idea of wearing a pfd while the boat is under power but not while fishing. I know all you guys out there are going to say well they make this product that is comfortable or this product that is great when fishing whatever. I think anybody that sets foot in a boat should be a good swimmer. I know fishermen that can't swim, and that just doesn't make sense to me. If your going to be on the water you should be able to swim.
Just my 2 cents

Nips, I think I know who you are now.....Frank M.'s son??? Sorry about what what happened to your dad, it shocked everyone. I didn't know him well but knew him as "440 Frank". I had an uncle who drowned on McGowan Lake back when I was a teen. He was 23 at the time, no life jacket.
Still don't think that pfd's should be mandatory tho'.
