We just returned from our annual week at White Lake. For the last 3 years, I was able to report at least 1 nickel - not this year. Everyone we talked with was having trouble finding big fish. In fact with several of us fishing, we managed only 2 bass over 3 lbs all week - until the last day (more on that later).
Personally, if I didn't laugh about the week, I would have cried. My motor died as soon as I unloaded the boat. It's an older Johnson and 2 dealers said the VRO pump went. Over $580 for the part and nobody could work on it until Wed or Thur. So, it went back on the trailer - goodbye 70 HP, trolling motor, depth finder and nice seats. Hello, old rental boat with a 9.9 HP - a little tough to fish with 3 people in it.
On Tue, a rotted limb fell off a birch tree next to the cabin - right through the new bed cover on my truck. $400 shot!
Wed, a chipmunk found it's way into the cabin and wanted to hide under the couch - where my wife was reading a book. At least that provided a little comic relief to the week.
Thur, I tried trolling some crawlers for walleye. I told my son to leave out enough line until he was bouncing bottom. Turns out that 110 yards of line is just enough to touch bottom in 20 ft of water. When the egg sinker hung up, it snapped the line at the bottom of the spool. That was a good learning experience for both of us.
At least we made it home safely and we are looking forward to next year.
Check out my next post for the vacation saver.
Expensive vacation
sorry about your bad luck with the motor,White Lake,Nickels?
,usually not a common phrase around here. now if you said Madawaska, then yes!!!,,If you're fishing pads and slop, they aren't there yet,no food,no frogs, and too cold/windy,try deeper rocky bottom with adjacent weedlines, the big fish are feeding on crawfish and minnows still.
