Muskie
Muskie
As there was no Muskie where I lived previously, I am very interested in chasing them once the season is here. Can you guys suggest a decent package to set myself up to target these guys (rod Reel). I appreciate any advice.
As you live in the Prior, may I suggest going to the Muskies Canada meeting at the Legion this Wednesday? I believe they are having a tackle swap....
You can check out the website at www.muskiescanada.ca
Muskystalker is the Chairman of that Chapter and also a member on here. A great group for certain.

I've always fished muskie successfully on the Ottawa with my plain old mid-range Shimano reel and rod with some 25-30lb test line with a good leader.
I 've never seen the point of buying a separate muskie rig when my normal 'medium' rig works fine. I've never lost a fish due to reel failure or broken a rod or anything like that... Buying a whole new muskie rig seems to be over-hyped and really unnecessary.
I've caught a few fish in the high 40" range and haven't had a problem.
However, I don't troll as much as it seems other muskie guys do so maybe a heavier rod would be in order if one was planning on trolling large baits for an extended period.

The reason being Wallypro is to have the right equipment to handle the fish safely both for yourself and for them.
Long fights can be fatal to muskie. This is the reason for the bigger rod, stroner line.
Secondly the bigger net works as safety for yourself and the fish.
A 40 is manageable, imagine a 54" not so fun or easy on the set-up you use.
Those that respect musky, know how fragile they are, and who seriously pursue them do invest in the equipment.
A Big muskie can be 20-30 years old! Having one die due to using the wrong gear would make some of us feel pretty crappy!
Not to rip into you, just this debate happens every time this time of year.
Please, for the love of the fish, DO NOT fish them with a lighter set-up to "enjoy" the fight. You will kill fish this way.

Also,
If you seriously intend to fish muskie I'd suggest visiting the Muskies Canada website for information on safe and proper catch and release tactics.
These are based on RESEARCH and not just gab from "people who fish"
www.muskiescanada.ca
There are also a ton of other muskie websites to go to also.
If 30lb were the way to go, then why doesn't Jim Saric or Pete Maina use it????
Same with Lazarus???
hmmmmmmm

dont use 30 lbs .
or 25 lbs leaders.
till this day i still believe that my cousin ryan missed a big one. and it snapped the leader.
with a 12 inch. believer that is....
that musky is sadly dead.
but that was back in the days . when i was a stupid fisherman.
but now its defferent with all the great info great people provided me.
listen to these musky guys. and learn.
why go with the strick minimum.
when you can go heavy and ensure your catch 100%???

I have to admit...Dale McNair's handing out autograph photos of his PB Muskie was wierd....but it was a blast talking to him from one Muskie nut to another nut!!!....I enjoyed the conversation with him until the wife started tuggin on my shirt sleeve to keep moving and get away from those turkey callers!!Robert Goulet wrote:Are either of those guys the same cat that was trying to give me his autograph at the Carp show for catching a big fish?? I thought that was a little ridiculous...get over yourself dude.Jamsers wrote:then why doesn't Jim Saric or Pete Maina use it????

Admit it... you stalked him out and was shaking like a fat kid at the candy counter hoping you would get his autograph!Robert Goulet wrote:Are either of those guys the same cat that was trying to give me his autograph at the Carp show for catching a big fish?? Get over myself? Or the guy handing out autographs get over himself?
1) That would have been Dale Macnair
2) Do you watch WFN????
3) I see absolutely no reason why I SHOULD not voice out against improper catching techniques, improper use of gear.
This website is to promote fishing. Catching fish with gear that will for the most part kill a fish, and a special one at that is on par with OOS fishing in my mind.
As for handing out autographs?????!!!!!
That's news.
I know exactly what you mean. I do not 'play out' or prolong the fight at all. I just real it in quick. I have fished with heavier gear and there isn't much difference in the time it takes to reel in the fish. Using lighter gear doesn't really mean that the fish is going to be over-played as you describe, well not in my case anyway.Jamsers wrote:The reason being Wallypro is to have the right equipment to handle the fish safely both for yourself and for them.

So gearing up with expensive heavier gear is an unnecessary expense. A cradle/ muskie net is worthwhile though.
