Wolfe: I've looked at this report............well over two times now.....What a day: As for the pics turning out......We took PLENTY of them. We took the majority of the pics after we had our limit. We wasted about 10 mins taking pics of the first lunker, and then decided the bite was too hot to be playing with the cameras. The photo op was to occur during lunch, or once we had our limit...... And it turned out that our limit came before our lunch.
Torpedo: We don't always catch fish....... It was just one of those days.....and a well deserved one at that.
Tip-up......Now you know why I said it was "Mike's day"!!
Slop: Are you OK with needles? You'll have to be sedated before we can take you into this lake!!
RJ: I'm sure the "best report" title won't last long. You haven't done an ice report in a while, and I'm sure Moosebunk will out do everyone, as usual!!
Now my thoughts on the day.
It started with a 3:25 am alarm going off. 20 minutes and I was loaded and on the way to pick up S.M.05. A quick call on the way, to make sure he was awake went like this:
Mike:"Hello."
Luke:"Your up? Be there in 10."
Mike:"There's a girl on my front steps with cold feet."
Luke:"Mike, wtf are you talking about?"
Mike:"There's a girl on my front steps with cold feet."
Luke:"Mike, wtf are you talking about, wake up man, I'll be there in 10"
Mike:"No seriously"
Luke:"Whatever man, be there in 10"
The thing with S.M.05 you can never get a straight answer out of the guy so I thought he was yankin my chain, or maybe he was still half asleep. But, as I pulled up, I see a car pulling away from his place. Which was the girl's brother picking her up. I could not help but to laugh out loud, all day long, every time I thought of him saying "There's a girl on my front steps with cold feet".
At any rate, we were loaded and pulled out at 4:26 am for the trip. Everything seemed to line up for us, no "gong show" happenings, like we are used to. Did not ditch the truck on the way to the lake, did not lock the keys in the truck when arriving at the lake, did not encounter any elk in the middle of the road on the way to the lake, did not "take a wrong turn", and did not get lost trying out a new shortcut. Everything was working out. We made great time, and were fishing a lot earlier than normal.
The weather was great, the sun was high and the beer was cold...... but did not freeze....Even the hotdog buns didn't freeze for a change.
Mike neglected to mention to that he landed 6 of the 10 fish. No misses, no losses. I landed 4, missed one, and lost two. One of which..... was HUGE... Mike kindly let me grab the tip-up from the "honey hole", which produced the three largest fish. The fish was running........like 90 mph. It was a strong, short fight, ending with a great story of "the one that got away"... I was still in awe from Mikes fish, so it didn't really even phase me like it usually does when I lose one.
What Mike also didn't mention was the spinal disorder the first lunker had. I am not sure of the term ("scoliosis" I was calling it), but I think if it wasn't for that, it would have been an even bigger monster.
The walleye was the highlight for me. I have caught plenty of walleye larger than 5.5 lbs, but not many of them out of small back lakes. I also haven't caught too many with such nice colours.
All in all, this would be my best day on the ice, that I can remember...
For once neither of us had anything to complain about. We even managed to get through the day without a sunburn.
Looking forward to a couple more trips before the ice is out.
Thanks again all for the comments.
The only problem with banner days like this is going back out the next time with high hopes of numbers and monsters.............but that's why we all know it's called fishing and not catching.
Numbers:
10/12 on the splake.
3/3 on the walleye
17 hour trip from start to finish
385 kms travelled by truck
4/4 on the alexander keiths
6/12 on the top doggs
Cheers!

Lukes right lots of great reports on this site. Moosebunk reports are just crazy.
As far as the fish count must have lost track in the kaos or after five or I would have gone 3/4 on the Keiths.
The fish had a curve in the tail area and the tail was about half of the size it should have been and a bit of a jaw defect as well
which would leave me to believe it had what is called
whirling disease. Seen it on a rainbow a few years back.
Not a problem for human consumption just makes em meaner
