I was fishing the pools in Appleton in July.
2 painted turtles decided to go after my jig. Got curious but never bit it.
They then proceeded to fight underwater. It was quite funny to see!
As turtles lay eggs in May time it seems a little early for mating?
I don't imagine that they'd go an entire winter before laying fertile eggs.
I do know that snappers are territorial and will fight each other.
Turtles are not as friendly as you think!
They often come to the docks in CP at night to eat, and they will go for lures.

Turtle Porn for sure
Definitely think you were a peeping TOM (BA).
I found this little bit of info.. It appears snappers mate basically Ice Out to Ice in.
"They are solitary animals, only in the mating season they come together, from April to November. The female snapping turtles lay about 80 eggs during the nesting season, from May to September."
