Minn Kota Bow mount with AutoPilot and Universal Sonar

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Minn Kota Bow mount with AutoPilot and Universal Sonar

Post by BIGSTEVE »

Hello and Happy New Years to Everyone!

I am looking to purchase a new Minn Kota TERROVA bow mount with AutoPilot and Universal Sonar2. I have a 16' LUND Laker with a Merc 25 hp Four Stroker. I feel the 55lb. thrust 12 volt model is more than sufficient. My local dealer is trying to get me into a Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 with AutoPilot and Universal Sonar2 but with 70lbs. thrust and 24volt system. I have a problem with this because with all the research I have done, the Powerdrive V2 seems to be a lesser unit and I dont really think I need 70lbs thrust and dont want the extra weight of 2 batteries.

I am looking for input from anyone who may have either one of these models currently or in the past.

Many thanks!!!!

I think the dealer is pointing you in the right direction. The 55 would do fine in open water but might not push you too well in the weeds chasing bass and have to work really hard and run down the battery quickly. The bigger unit would probably do a better overall job and your battery life would be greatly increased and you will enjoy fishing for a week without constantly having to recharge. In my humble opinion go big... you won't reget it.

I had a 12v 55 PDAP for many uears on a 16', it was okay (just), it would last a day on the water, but if you fish moving water at all then I would go with the 24 70 - it can get you out of trouble quick. I now have an 24 80 PDAPUS on a 17'6" and it's great. Lasts a few days and holds on the Ottawa in windy conditions no problem. Also consider the co-pilot, I can fish off the back, see the main sonar/GPS and not have to mess with the quirky foot pedal.

Why not just move up to the next size up terrova? The 55 lb will do but just like outboards bigger is better. You are better off using a bigger motor at 50% then a smaller one a 100%.

Nothing beats the autopilot with the co pilot in my opinion as you spend your time fishing and not driving.

Basically when you turn on the autopilot it will steer the boat in the same direction. It uses a compass setting and you can concentrate on fishing and let the motor steer for you. Normally a small adjustment now and again will have you fishing a shoreline or weed line.

Another great thing about the auto pilot is when you are fishing in wind and you catch a fish, you just need to point the motor away from shore or rocks and do your business without worrying about crashing in rocks or shore.
