rod carrier.........

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

rod carrier.........

Post by walleyehauler »

Just wondering if anyone can give me any info on soft or hard rod carriers to strap on top of a vehicle. I go to Florida for a holiday every year and surf fish a lot and have four rods with me and this is the first year I won't be driving a van to keep them inside.......??????

rod carrier

Post by Super »

Hi,
I just use ABS pipe with end caps duct tapped on, when I am traveling with other guys and all our stuff gets thrown in the back of a pick up truck. The pipe can be cut to the proper length for your rods.
Just buy the pipe at Canadian Tire or Home Depot.
Just put a pair of socks or foam in each end so the rods do not get damaged from sliding back and forth.

Rod Carrier

Post by Musky Angler »

I use a Plano rod carrier on top of my SUV. The larger rod carrier is approx 5-6 inches wide and extendable to 8.5 feet; I find it perfect for my larger musky rods. The carrier is held in place by Thule load ends on my roof rack system. Finally, I use small cam buckles to anchor the carrier to the 'load ends' I have never had any issues with this set-up, even at high speeds. All the best in FL!

When my father used to make his own rods he did the same thing with the ABS pipe...4" by 8 foot length. He of course works in the waterworks business so gets them very affordable  ...They always worked great and are very cheap to buy...He also used a small peice of styrofoam at each end to save the tips from breaking.

I use a "Bazuka" I think it is from Flambeau. It handles 6 or 7 rods up to 8 feet and it says it is"baggage handler proof" whatever that means. It also collapses for easy storage & can be locked pretty secure. Small investment if you like to store rods securely.

I use a simliar setup to Super. I use ABS pipe with a fixed (glued) cap on the one end and a threaded cap on the other. I made a case for each rod and used 1 1/2" ABS with pipe insulation stuffed in each end. It worked very well carrying my rods on top of my car when I drove to BC and back.

I have a Thule roof top carrier that I bought to carry four pairs of skiis. When I make my annual trip trout fishing trip with two friends, my little Jeep Liberty has no extra interior room so I use the ski carrier as it is long enough to accommodate our rods. To protect them while traveling I simply line the carrier with a full length strip of 2" foam, and use the ski tie downs to hold them in place - has worked great so far.
