I didn't want this to get buried on page 3 of well wishes to Big Jim and I certainly do wish him well.
You 50+ year old guys and anyone with a history of Colon Cancer in your families, get yourselves out there and have a Colonoscopy test done.
It's something your doctor should suggest when you reach 50 but I know not everyone has a family doctor.
It is not the most comfortable or pleasant test you'll ever take but it can save your life.
Colon Cancer has a very high cure rate if found early but it is also one of those diseases where if you are experiencing symptoms, it's getting late in the game.
In the words of Larry the cable guy "Git R Done".

Joey Rat,
I have ulcerative colitis, and this puts me at a significantly higher risk bracket for colon cancer. Unfortunately, this means I am part of the frequent flyer colonoscopy group.
It IS a very important diagnostic study, and you are very right that often by the time signs/symptoms of colon cancer are present, it is advanced.
If you are sedated properly -- and I recommend you go for the nice, out-like-a-light cocktail, then this is not a big deal. The prep is then worse than the actual procedure.
But a note from past experience: if you choose to be "awake" for it...some people can tolerate it just fine, and for others it is very painful.
Talk with your doctor and express your concerns; together you can come up with a good anesthesia plan.

As Wolfe said, the prep is worse than the procedure.
Not to make this a medical forum but Big Jim was having a blood test done and found cancer in his prostate. Another test 40+ males should start getting regularly. Colonoscopy does not check the prostate
Not something to joke about or get squeamish about.
