First weekend on ice for me of the year and it went off with some success...
Saturday we hit our Perch Lake to give it a look...3 inches of solid black ice...we harassed the jumbos for a few hours...
Sunday I made my yearly one time visit to Crappie Bay and joined the Sea of Blue....action was steady with dozens of gills and crappies released but in the end I and managed near a limit of keepers...largest was this 12.5 incher...nice to see the old crew down there doin their thing...
I was somewhat surprised at the quality of the ice down there....safe yes...but the hole I was over was only an inch or so of black ice...and about 4 of white...
I hit the ice yesterday at Petrie Island, in Crappie Bay on the Ottawa river. The fish were a bit shy but I did manage five keepers and they will be tasty. Can't wait to get out again. The bite was feather light but with my LX-5 flasher I was able to see them rise to the jig and if I just pulled it slightly away slowly it almost always triggered a hit.
Tons of fun for sure.... now I can't wait for Walleye Bay to freeze enough to try those fish on for size.... first ice eyes.... can't wait.
Nice fish RJ! Could you give me some advise ? i have crappie on my local water and i know where they are befor the ice in , Will they still hold in the same areas? and what kind of depth are you targeting?
Any recomendations for bait ? Minnows, Maggots , Worms?

I thought that was you RJ. We passed one another coming in off the road.
I didn't fish. I was thinking about it, but after watching 2 of the local regulars muscle 2 young lads off their holes, I figured I'd head to another location.
