this is why people have to chek there motor lower unit befoe winter in case there some water in the lower unit..and no one want it to freez and mabe brake.outch.
or it might be old oil....
lower unit is so easy to change..i do it 2 time a year to make sher.
Could be both. Some gear oil is a nice blue and some higher end stuff is the colour of maple syrup. If there is water in there you will notice it becomes milky. You can also smell it, used gear oil smells burnt usualy.
When you drain the foot there is always a bit of "old oil" left so it could have mixed in.
Is it your gear oil or engine oil and what brand engine do you have. There is many brands of oil for both and a couple are dark. Let me know and I can better help you.

Did it smell foul? It looks like well used gear oil and not changed. Gear oil is iether fairly clear like thick motor oil, blue or green depending on the brand.
Looks like it hasn't been changed, does not look like water in oil.
