Wow! - interesting to hear the follow-up to all of this; and posted on ESPN! Who knew it would become so huge. Hopefully he Mr. Grail feels somewhat vindicated and start resting easy.
Thanks for posting.
"I couldn't even walk down the street," he said. "People kept asking me why I cut it up. I couldn't sleep. I lost 11 pounds that first week. The phone rang day and night. I had to have my phone number changed, so I could not be contacted.
"I am not a trophy fisherman. I fish for the sport of it.
I got so much grief over this fish, I wish I had never caught it."
How would you feel if people treated your dad/grandfather that way?
Its one thing to voice your opinion on whether or not you agree its 12lb, but to start calling him names and harassing him, thats nuts. People were even badgering him just for eating it (not even mentioning the record), but back in his day, the catch and keep anglers were more commonplace, its what he grew up with. I remember reading some colorful messages on this very site about him.
Let the poor guy enjoy his big fish, let him tell the fish tale to his grandchildren and let it be.
I do...I would have gained 11 pounds or more if I did'nt sleep at night. Nice to see an in depth spin on things after the fact. I know if I caught the record smallie, I'd wrap 'it' in a flannel blanket and read 'it' a bedtime story.....hahaha!
