Hey, Nodie,
I don't think Bobber meant to not hold the bass vertical -- just to not start the vertical hang but then tilt your wrist so that the fish is hoisted up at an angle, whereas the jaw takes a tremendous amount of weight at a pretty funky angle. There has been some speculation that this can break the jaws of the fish, or at least damage them to some degree.
On the flip side, vertical holds of any kinds for large esox are definitely not recommended. There is undue pressure put on the spine as well as organs. These fish are meant to be supported in water, not air, keep in mind. Unfortunately, some people prefer to vertical hang big pike and muskies because they think it makes a more impressive picture.
Anyway, it's never a bad idea to support the underside of whatever fish you catch, especially if it's of a good size and you plan on releasing it.
Now get back to your awesome bassing so we can get some more great reports and pictures!!
