Trolling Motor and Battery Question

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Trolling Motor and Battery Question

Post by JohnB »

Hi Everyone,

I think I have decided on the trolling motor setup I will use on the 14' Aluminum I use regularly and would like an some opinions on the matter. I figure with passengers, gear, motor etc. the weight of the boat is something like 700-800lbs.

I think I will go with the 40lb Thrust Minn Kota Endura with an Energizer Deep Cycle battery. For a charger I am looking at the Nautilus Fast Charger from Canadian Tire.

I tend to do trolling on a small lake a few hours in the morning and a few in the pm. Basically, I want to extend the life of the 30 year old motor on the boat now and reduce the direct pollution into the lake.

I think this is the best outfit I can afford and from reading all of the other posts on the board about batteries etc. I don't think it is a terrible package. Would anyone have any different suggestions?

Thank you all for you help.

JohnB....I have the Nautilus Intelligent Battery Charger and it works great!! As far as the Minn Kota goes though I would recommend the same one I have which is the Minn Kota 40lb Maxxum. I'm not sure what price you were qouted for the Endura but you can buy the 40lb thrust Maxxum at LeBarons for $318.00 which I think is super deal :) The Maxxum will give you up to 5 times longer run time on a single charge compared to the Endura...I have a 14' aluminum and I have gone 3 days with the Maxxum on a remote lake without having to change the battery.....My buddy has an Endura and they were fishing last weekend for trout and went through 3 batteries between Friday night - Sunday morning....

Thanks for the info Trouthunter. I didn't realize that the Maxxum would extend the battery life for that length. I think I will spend the extra cash to get into the Maxxum now (the Endura is $215 at Walmart) - now I just have to head to Ottawa and Lebaron's!
