Trout opener on April 28th, any suggestions where to

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Trout opener on April 28th, any suggestions where to

Post by FreshFish »

From prev post I got new Bass rod, but I can't wait till june to try it out, my medium action rod with spinning reel, should work fine on river trout
the only problem is that I've never fished river trout, don't get me wrong I've tried and caught a couple but that's it.

So I'm thinking of somewhere around GTA, a river, Humber or Grand River
any suggestions or if anyone wants to join (and poss show me the ropes)

I heard that Grand river is good around Paris and a bit north, the bend are there and few nice holes

suggestions? advises?

There are many rivers near Port Hope which hold trout. Shelter Valley is a good spot if you know the area as well as a few rivers down the road from the hotel off the 401 is good too heading North. I always remeber fishing a bank of some river that you had to pass by a metal sculpters yard full of metal objects etc. There used to be an old bridge crossing just down that road and they like to hold up in some of the pools there.

Some of the trout water on the Grand is flyfish only and no-kill.

I agree with Almontefisher about Shelter Valley creek. I have had some great fishing there when the run is on. :) I don't know what your vehicle situation is like as that can be quite limiting if you don't have one. :( You should try the Lake Ontario board of this site for some help. I know in years gone by there was a great fishermens pier in either Oakville or Burlington that was fantastic shore fishing for salmon and trout in the spring. Check with the Ministry of Natural Resources office that is responsible for your area as they should be able to point you in the right direction. I believe that there is even a trout/salmon run up the Credit River in Toronto now so you may want to check out the lake front in that area. Let us know how you make out. :)

I got wheels 8) and the will to wake up at 4am to be at the spot for sunrise

I'm just getting in the fishing sport on my own, happy to learn by trial and error, last year was mostly error but I'm hoping that this year will be different.

Will Shelter Valley creek have any activity early this year?? I'm looking for a place to fish on Saturday 28th on the opening day

Definitely hit Shelter Valley early in the season, that is usually when the best fishing is. I would suggest a pre-season scouting trip to the Grafton area to find some good spots to fish. If you check some bait shops in the Cobourg/Grafton area they will be helpful and you might even be able to get your hands on some spawn sacks.

I would strong suggest your pre-season scouting trip as it will also give you an opportunity to check out some of the other trout/salmon streams along the way such as the Ganaraska at Port Hope and Wilmot at Newcastle, both of which are excellent trout streams in the spring are actually quite a bit closer to you than Shelter Valley. Good Luck :D

Hi Fresh Fish,

If you are interested in only catch and release there is a section of the Credit River off of Highway 10 near Caledon that is artificial, one barbless hook only (no trebs). Trout unlimited has a section of river designated around the town of Inglewood. There are brown trout and brook trout in decent numbers and very decent sizes. I did not fish that area last year, but it has always produced for me.

Hope this helps.

Can't really help as I've never targetted trout but...out of curiosity, how do they fight?

It has been a number of years since I fished that area but from the looks of the link that you sent me, you will be wise to fish south of the 401. I would look for a location at the mouth of the Ganaraska in Port Hope and then work from there. You will probably find allot of other anglers to talk to and learn more about where to fish.

Kpin: In regards to your question about how they bite....hooking into a Lake Ontario rainbow trout (steelhead) or cohoe or chinook will be one of the great thrills of a lifetime. They are a great fighting fish and there are some huge fish to be caught.

I've caught a couple of river trout, they don't compare to smallmouth but like any fish they hate to be caught

as for lake trout I've only caught one, by mistake or luck not sure, but wasnt fishing for one, and those get big I mean 20lbs big so you can guess that one

I don't mind catch/release, but I went there last year and it was dead, from about 6am to noon 3 of us only managed to catch 2 trout, and some panfish :?

Txs fellas, so little time, so short a fishing season and so many species left to add to the list! Although, due to 1 single fish last year, I think I've officially become muskie addicted.

I hate to hijack the thread, but I caught my first trout yesterday (rainbow) on a small inline spinner and it was pretty cool. I will add them to my list of fish to go after with very light tackle (2-6lb test).

Hell, if I manage to catch the fly-fishing bug later on, they will be high on the list because I see those buggers love hitting (real) flies on the surface in lakes. It really builds the excitement to see the actio
I will probably try a few stocked lakes to help to make my trout-arm stronger, at least until Bass season opens!
