A sign of the times

More on our wacky weather.

I was driving past the waterfront here in Gananoque today and did a double take. There is a pretty large open section and there's a guy out driving around in a boat. Never seen that here in February. There's no snow either.

Too crazy, ganman! Maybe not as crazy as the guy in the boat, though.

We've had lots of open water here the past several weeks. Finally, the lake refroze late last week -- enough so that for the past 2 days we've had some brave ice fishermen again.

It looks like if Johnstown is going to have their pike derby...it will need to be by boat instead of hut.

The water was open today at the end of the marina docks.

What's the earliest you've seen ice out in some of your "regular" waters over the years, guys?

Another thing Wolfe remember last year when I saw so many wolves. There are not as many of deer, only the local population, the ones from the back country didn't show and they are not "yarded" up like last year hence no big wolves only a few of the little coyote types that travel alone are around this year.

Yeah, ganman, I remember our conversations on that last winter. Guess the wolves move when their food moves or disappears. The deer here are having a pretty easy go of things this winter. Plenty of open grasses in between patches of snow. Why then must they still attack the purchased plants and trees?!

It's been a wacky winter here in Jersey also, alternating from ice to soft water every couple of weeks. Before the big snow hit us it was in the 60's here and now it's colder. But today it is going to be in the 50's, very strange. I actually got my line wet in January! No kiddin, was soft water then! Bet March is cold and snowy!

BigJoe,

My brother lives in South Jersey; he told me the redwing blackbirds and grackles arrived late last week. The next day they had 8" of snow. If you closed your eyes, it sounded like spring. If you opened them, it looked like winter. Whacky!

Wacky for sure, mild , rain , cold , mild , snow .......
Although local hut operator only claims she lost a week

Ice is pretty good now , we were mile out from Beaverton in a suburban on the weekend ,over 20 inches solid ice.

Lots of dangerous spots if you don't check with the hut operators.

I know in Port Dover we have the odd year where it doesn't really ice up, this is one of them.. but I imagine that's a pretty rare occurance in the Ottawa area!

Even around here I think most regular spots are pretty good.

The obvious, or at least the ones that should be obvious, (ie) fast currents, eddy's (sp?) etc are the danger spots.

We still have tonnes of ice even with all the up and down weather.

Now will this mean a quicker thaw, I'm thinking yes, so at some point you have to start thinking of this as well.

BigJoe,

I know you're not far from Wayne (NJ) where my husband is originally from. Wayne made the news up here for the amount of snow they got.

I know Central Park in NYC had between 26-27" of snow form that (Nor'easter) storm.

Amaaaazing!
