White caps - white knuckles - Lac Deschenes Sunday July 10

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

White caps - white knuckles - Lac Deschenes Sunday July 10

Post by Leakyboot »

Took off before dawn this morning because I had to get back early. The forecast was for a west wind all day. I hate west winds on Lac Deschenes. They just come charging down the pipe bringing with them 3 foot swells with the occasional surprise sunami just to scare the bejeepers out of you. As soon as you pull up to the sailing club, you can hear the clanging of the rigging on the sailboats. That's not a great sign.

I haven't been out much lately and many of my weekends are spoken for. So, I figured I'd see if I could hide near shore over on the 'Dark Side". Getting there was a challenge. I started out with my rain jacket on but soon had to stop to put on the pants too.

I pulled onto a shallow flat just offshore and anchored just as the sun was coming over the treetops.

The waves were smaller. But, there weren't any fish. I decided I'd have to troll or leave. Troll it is.

I was using a Berkeley Frenzy running maybe 5 to 6 feet down in 12 to 15 feet of water when a 1 1/2 lb. channel cat took it. A short while later, a much larger cat took it as well. Once again, high up in the water column. Not really where I'd expect them. I was going to take pics of the cat. However, he was foul hooked near the eye. I figured he'd had enough for one day

Apart from a hammer handle pike, I didn't see much other action there.

It's hard to get a perspective of the size of these waves relative to my 16 footer.

Finally, around 10 AM, I made it over to Shirley's Bay. The wind had subsided somewhat. Caught this fella in 5 feet of water on top of a reef. No leader and only 8lb test mono on a 2" plug

He was battered and beaten by something bigger than him.

I was going to provide pics of the lures which produced. They're both in the river. Argh!

Later,
Leaky,
How was the water level? RJ
That depends RJ. At the crest of the waves it was up two feet. In the troughs, it was down a foot. Best I can guess is that it is right around normal for this time of year. I still have my prop. So, it musn't be too bad.

BTW. Here's a simple thing to make your outings better. When you lie on the bow of the boat to tie the anchor, do yourself a favour and swing the shades on your lanyard around to your back.

At a minuimum, carry an extra pair of shades, perhaps. See photo above. I must have quite the sunburn around my right eye this AM./

cheers,
