Sturgeon opens this Wednesday

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Sturgeon opens this Wednesday

Post by Pints »

Strugeon season re-opens Wednesday in this area (Southeastern Ontario Map B in the regs). Anyone target them, or are they just incidental catches?

I plan to try and target them Larry, but not in your neck of the woods but instead my own. I've seen one so far this year and a buddy's bro caught a 56" accidentally while walleye fishing. I hear he had about an hour long fight with the big fish on his 8 or 10 pound mono. My home river is shrinking quick this year and water levels may keep me from getting to better sturgeon grounds, but, my father is up now and we plan to give 'em a short go this week amidst our pike and walleye outing. I've saved up walleye and pike roe, leftover walleye chunks after the filleting, and whitefish chunks. We'll see how it goes. My baitcasters set with 50lb braid, 6/0 gamakatsu and a 6oz pyramid sinker. Outta hold a good chunk of funk steady in the river.

Good luck with your sturgeon hunting. :D

I'll be targeting some Sturgeon in the next couple of weeks. I know a spot that has a good population. Hopefully I can get into a couple.

Salmon, I'll keep ya posted on my findings.

No rush for you Salmon. Work on catching other species you haven't caught (if there are any), before you know it you'll be beaching 8 footers with myself and the gang. :D :D :D

I brought my rod along while whitewater kayaking on the weekend (on the Ottawa near Beachburg). Casting from shore at one of the rapids, my crankbait foul hooked a sturgeon for a few seconds until it rolled and freed itself.

Now that I've got a spot for them, I may try targeting them. It'll be kind of crazy fighting one there as the current is VERY fast and the only rod that fits in my boat is my icefishing rod.
