Spooning with...I mean for pike question

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Spooning with...I mean for pike question

Post by MuskieWannabe »

So, as I prepare for my hopefully pike filled weekend I decided to also pick up a big spoon to add to my arsenal. Question though. The spoon is about 6" long with an absolutely gigantic treble hook on the back. I was thinking about either switching it to a smaller treble or even just a single hook but was unsure about how it may affect how the spoon moves in the water. Any thoughts? What about alos using a trailing plastic grub or something to add to the presentation. I justthink that the treble hooks that came with it are too huge and that I could get away with something just a little smaller.

Thoughts or ideas would be great!!!

I wouldn't worry about the size of the hooks. Look at the size of the mouth of pike and Musky, they can eat a pretty big walleye. I would concern myself more about matching the spoon size to the size of the pike in the area you are fishing. Take a look at some of the mini pike and walleye caught at Westmeath last weekend and the size of the lures they hit. If there are big pike, use big baits. As for the trailer keep those for jigs or spiner baits. You will likely spoil the action of the spoon.
Good luck this weekend! RJ SR

I don't think changing the treble size will change the action of the spoon. Adding a plastic may change it depending on what type of spoon it is. If you are going for big pike then the treble on it may do the trick for u.

I've been doing well this week for pike using a 6 inch weedless daredevle in flourescent red colour. It uses a single hook and I pinch down the barb. Super fast retrieve with the fish hitting it on the pause. Fishing in two feet of water. It hasn't attracted a single bass either.

Rather than change the treble size, perhaps you can just pinch down a barb, or if you're feeling confident, maybe two.

I'd be interested to hear what you ended up doing and how you made out.

Good luck.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

I've changed the treble to a single on just about all my pike spoons - it made no noticeable difference in the lure action or strike percentage. I've lost a few fish because of it, but not many. So far it's been worth it, especially not having to dig a treble out of a fish's gullet.
There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.
