Petrie Madness

Post by Seaweed »

Wow ... nice catch Bacon

I can`t believe how many sturgeon have been caught around Petrie this winter.

We must be sitting on top of the Sturgeon Nursery... makes sense that they would lay eggs there.. mild current and warm water... I guess they just hang around until they find the big river. Too cool

Makes me wonder about some of the big fish I mark on the Fish Finder during soft water fishing though... now I will be wondering if they are muskie or sturgeon.

By the way ... I used to eat smoked sturgeon as a kid when I was growing up in Quebec... it was some of the tasitest stuff I have ever eaten... not saying to keep them little ones but if anyone gets a big one and has a smoker...

It's great to see the Sturgeon being caught but I am curious if in previous years fishermen were catching them as often or if something has changed bringing the Sturgeon into the area in greater numbers. Anyone have any insight?

Thanks Markus, I'm putting some money on you getting one this Saturday, and knowing you it'll be a 6 footer :D We caught them jigging for walleye in about 20 feet of water. Trust me we weren't targeting them but maybe next time I will...

Oh ya, I guess I can wait... but then I only have a week or two before muskie and bass open and I have to say the sturgeon won't be getting my attention then. I guess I'll just have to stick to jigging for walleye...

Sturgeon

I have never heard of them being caught before around Petrie Spinner. I wonder if the fact that they have stopped stirring up the bottom with the old sand dredging operation that used to run in Walleye Bay has something to do with it. Just a thought.

Water clairity from Zebra Mussel might be something too.

The hole in the ozone layer could be influenciing the manner in which the internal compass in the sturgeon hook a right at the Mansion on the hill and come into the bay in stead of heading straight up the river... might this lead to sturgeon redeveloping tiny legs to cross the road at the baitshop to continue their steady fight up river.... more will be revealed.
