Calabogie camping - permits required?
A friend and I are interested in trout fishing and camping around the calabogie area, but we're total newbies with regards to the camping laws. Is it okay to camp on anything that is labelled "crown land"? I heard that some places around the calabogie lakes areas require a permit - is this...

Re: Shirley's Bay Crappie
Oh man, thank you for the responses! I went out on the rideau today, and caught several jumbo perch, but got skunked on crappie. =( I went in the evening (5:30pm), and before I set out, I talked with someone who had a lot of success catching them. I think the bite really just turned off in the eveni...

Shirley's Bay Crappie
I'm looking to target some crappie this weekend, and I'm currently eyeing Shirley's bay. Does anyone know if crappie gather in the small shallow bay that's past chartrand island and before Innes point? On another note: Is there even crappie on the west end of the Ottawa river? I'm considering abando...

Re: Crappie fishing in Renfrew county
Not entirely sure about fishing in Renfrew county, but I had fairly good fishing last year on the Rideau river, around the Kemptville area. As Out4trout mentioned, a pencil/slip bobber with a jig on the end seemed to do the trick. As for bait, I used Berkley Power Nymphs, and they were quite effecti...

Re: Best $150-250 rods
This is tough to answer. 1st, sensitivity is subjective. There is no way to actually measure how sensitive a rod is and that factor will change from person to person. What I deem is a great rod, others may feel is dead. 2, I wouldn't say that range is the sweet spot for sensitivity. I would say tha...

Best $150-250 rods
After browsing around, looking for a decent casting rod, it seems like $150-250 is the sweet spot for sensitivity. I've looked at several rods (Tatula, E6X, St Croix Avid, etc), but it's really difficult to discern which rods are worth the money. What would be, in your opinion, the best rod in this ...

Re: LF suggestion on rod G.LOOMIS GL2 series
After reading some reviews online, it seems as if the GL2 series is rather mediocre in terms of sensitivity for its price. I haven't fished with it, so I wouldn't know though. Perhaps others who have experience with it might be able to provide better insight!

Re: Miracle Weight Loss for Flashers/Fishfinders
This is a great idea! I actually took a page from your book, but instead of buying the "Blue Brick" Lipo battery, I got the Wuhai portable battery battery pack/jump starter: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00WPJWMY6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 For the price, it has a ...

Last time I checked, the Canadian tire in kanata centrum has zoom flukes! I haven't seen them at any other Canadian tire, or outdoors stores though.

LF: Used fish finder
I'm thinking about getting a fish finder this upcoming softwater season. I'm reluctant to spend too much to buy a new one. Does anyone have a used one that they're willing to sell? Preferably something that at least has GPS capabilities!

Re: Shirley's bay 2016
Went out today as well (for the first time ever), and met Choke, who gave me some awesome tips about keeping minnows alive. Trekked out on the ice at 3:30pm, and stayed a bit longer than Choke - till after dark (around 7:00pm). No bites for the first few hours, then half an hour after sundown, we go...

Re: Ice Fishing 101
Thank you for the replies! It's been amazingly helpful! (lovin the community at fish-hawk here) Just bought myself a couple of ice rods and tip ups at Sail today...excited to get on the water and try them out. Skarner, I'll pm you! For baits, what would you recommend? Would a summer 1/16th ounce jig...

Ice Fishing 101
Hey everyone, I'm a seasoned softwater angler, but I'm looking into getting into ice fishing this winter (I know, its a little late in the season :P). However I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I was wondering if anyone could help me answer some of my newbie questions? Should I use a tip-up o...

Went out a couple weeks ago, unfortunately I only caught bass and walleye. I was fishing from a canoe in 3-5 feet of water, near rocks and thin weeds!

These look like a great deal! What are the power/action ratings on those rods?
