Re: New to fishing - Ottawa river
At Blair, keep an eye out for cutthroat: http://www.fish-hawk.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45981&hilit=cutthroat Unless of course you ARE cutthroat. In which case, I'd like to speak to you about an opportunity to protect my trailer. E You owe me a coffee! I spit it out while reading your comment...

Re: New to fishing - Ottawa river
As per my reply to your other post: use topwater lures at dusk, like the jitterbug. You won't be disappointed.

Re: trolling deep for lakers
Thanks guys. The lake I caught that one in is called Sault aux Cochons, it's a few hours north of Tadoussac, after you cross the Saguenay. Closest town is called Forestville. It's really remote, the kind of place where you have to have an ATV or at least a truck with high clearance. I'm heading back...

Re: trolling deep for lakers
A brief post-script to this discussion... Thanks for all the great input. I got back from up north yesterday. It was a fantastic trip, great weather and a lot of fishing for lakers, brookies and pike. For lakers, I tried trolling with the dipsy's and didn't have much luck (caught one tiny one), alth...

Re: trolling deep for lakers
This is why I love Fish-Hawk! Great tips from everyone, thanks! That link to cayuga-fisher is especially great. I bookmarked it for reference, what a find.
Hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and gets out on the water for some fishing!

Re: trolling deep for lakers
Thanks for the tips SeaMonster. I have been resisting buying a downrigger set-up, cost is a factor but also just a concern over general clutter in a smallish boat. But what you say is true. The sonar we have is pretty good and I do jig the way you recommend. That's the way I've caught them before. I...

trolling deep for lakers
I'm headed up to northern Quebec this Saturday for a week of fishing for brookies and lakers. I'll be fishing familiar waters as we're going to my father-in-law's camp up towards Baie Comeau. There are tons of great lakes there and we have ATVs equipped with hitches to tow our boat to the more remot...

Re: new boat advice...kind of
Hey John, welcome. I was in the same boat as you (pun intended) until last year, i.e., had no boat. I bought a 12-foot aluminum runabout last summer and I love it. It's really improved the quality of my catches by opening up new water to me. However, your concerns about "swamping" are vali...

Re: Charter Fishing in Nanimo area BC
Zippy, I grew up in Vancouver and spent every summer as a boy in the Courtenay/Comox area. Did a lot of salmon fishing up there but had family with boats so never used a charter. I am sure there are plenty of good charters in Nanaimo but back when I was fishing there (80's and 90's) the real action ...

Re: sketchy characters
There are truly some super-sketchy characters who fish from shore along the Ottawa river, and prior to being able to get off shore to fish, I would always find myself very paranoid when fishing certain places with leaving poles around (I always take multiple rods fishing), or tackle boxes... all it...

Re: sketchy characters
So was any fish caught that day....I mean, I am surfing the Fish Talk forum! A bit off topic, sorry, but didn`t know where else to post it. On that evening, we caught a couple below average smallies just off of Upper Duck Island, using live minnows on light jigs. Not a memorable outing, save for th...

Re: sketchy characters
Is "Cut-throat" a skinny guy about 5"7? Broken tooth? I'd appreciate you describing him to me a bit more. I may actually know who this guy is as I have heard from old high school friends that a guy who went to school with us (Gloucester) had his throat slit. Jimmy: I think he was abo...

sketchy characters
Who has run into some of the unsavoury characters that like to hang around fishing locations in the City of Ottawa? There's a particularly nasty guy at the Blair Road launch, was always smoking joints and just being a menace to anyone and everyone. He has a huge scar on this throat, like he got cut ...

Re: Crotch Lake 2014
Have u ever fished silver lake? I fished Silver Lake for the first time this May, just a couple days after the late ice out. Marked a lot of them north of the only island but only caught one, in about 15-20 fow. I hear it's decent for smallies in summer but you don't hear about people catching lake...

Re: Crotch Lake 2014
Nice fish! Too bad about the rain but looks like you made good use of the time you had to fish. I've been meaning to try Crotch Lake for some camping for a while now. I camped on Crown land at Long Schooner in June and paid a small fee to North Frontenac for the privilege of parking and the site. It...
