Nice evening

Went out for walleye tonight. A bit nippy, so I stayed in the Pack Shack with the stove going. Got 4 walleye - 2 about 2 lbs and 2 smaller pan-sized. Looking forward to lunch!

I just made a frame for my sled. It consists of a pair of skis I got from Play it Again sports for $10. To these, I screwed 3 blocks of 2X4, 4" long, to each ski, and i made a small frame of 2X2 to sit the sled on. It raises the sled by 5". The sled is secured to the frame using small bung...

You're absolutely right, though another coffee never hurts! In deep snow, it would mean dragging even more weight. The problem I have is that right now, in 3 inches or so of snow, I'm lugging all of the weight of the sled through the snow. Also, the sled is a little worn down, so the bottom is rough...

That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing. Making a light frame of 2X2's, with pillars/legs of 2X4 to raise the sled 3 1/2 inches off the snow (I may use 4X4 blocks about 5 inches long, not sure yet). For those of you that are also shooters, a pillar bedded sled, pretty neat, huh? I'd hook the sled ...

Ice fishing sled

The last few times I was out with my fishing gear, I thought someone had filled the sled with rocks. I stepped on my tongue at least 5 times in 3/4 km. (stepping on one's tongue while wearing ice creepers is painful). While rooting around in the basement today, I came across a can of glide wax they ...

I was reading the stuff on Wikipedia regarding ling. The world record sizes are interesting, in that I'm sure that if we did not break it several times we were very close to it. The average weight of ling we caught during the smelt run was about 10 lbs. with many of them around 20 lbs. We never both...

Favourite recipes

I was just adding a reply to the ling thread, and thought it might be nice to have a thread where people submit their favourite recipes. Here are mine: For white-fleshed fish: crushed barbecue chips. Dip the fillets in milk and egg, then coat with the crushed chips. I also use dill pickle chips with...

For supper, I cooked up 3 walleye and a small ling I had caught. Used my standard egg/milk dip, roll in crushed BBQ chips. I asked my wife which one she liked best, and she was very hard pressed to say which one tasted better. I concur. Mind you, ling caught in the summer are very mushy, like warm-w...

We used to catch tons of them in the spring when the smelts run. The best bait I've used are a dead smelt on the bottom. Haven't fished for them in years.

Ling

Ling caught through the ice are delicious. They are just like cod. Is Otter Lake accessible by foot?

Eating

haven't tried them out of Port Hope, but in the Credit the smaller ones are good. the big ones are like any other big fish - not much good IMHO. BTW, I was at the Credit on the weekend, nothing yet, but it should be any day now. Will advise as soon as I know anything.

Fishing at Fitzroy

Several years ago, I went to Galeta to fish for catfish from shore, but I forget where exactly we fished or how to get there. Any help would be appreciated.
