I usually put on Winter tires and keep them year round. Wow. The soft rubber compound isn't made to last in summer temps. They wear out so much faster that way. If you are in an accident with a trailer attached they would obviously find out. Your right. I assume now you were planing on using the rental companies insurance....the extra $20 dollar a day thing. In that case your screwed, your right. On the other hand if you inquire of your own insurance compan...

I know that all rental companies (except Uhaul) forbid towing, but what they dont know wont hurt them.
