East of The Bay

I spent the first two weeks of July paddling a river in northern Quebec. The goal of this trip was threefold: -paddling -fishing -enjoying the company of friends At the request of other members of our group, no locations will be posted on the Internet. Consider this a “River X” report. In our gr...

Bushnell 4200 3x9x40mm is a pretty amazing deal for around $300. This is what I have on my Tikka.

That is canoe speed. I have no experience with kayaks, so I can't comment on their speed. Add time if: 1-your canoe is heavily loaded or it is a slow canoe (like an old town tripper or something. The rental canoes at opeongo outfitters will be fast.) 2-you are not an experienced paddler Opeongo is a...

Lots of good suggestions. Here are a few more: You should be able to average 5km an hour (casual padding pace), unless traveling into a head wind. Add time for breaks. I suggest these over iodine tablets : http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442371757&FOLDER%3...

I have bought it from The Chandlery. They are located near Richmond Road and Carling.

They have a website too: http://www.thechandleryonline.com/

Marine carpeting isn't cheap. On top of what moonshine said, I think it resists mold as well.

Seaguar knot: http://www.netknots.com/html/seaguar_knot.html

Only takes about 15 seconds to tie once you figure it out. It is marketed by Seaguar for attaching flourocarbon line to braided line. It has always worked well for me.

I second this. I have caught some large pike trolling for walleye.

Take a trip over to Baitcasters.

That's a bummer man. :( I have a set of these that I purchased at CT a few years back... http://www.securimark.ca/images/Traction4saisons-d.jpg I've never had to use them (hopefully won't either) but they look like they would do the trick. I have used these in snow and mud. They work very well for ...

No hockey sticks, but we did use canoe paddles for one of the tarps. Equally Canadian in my opinion. ;)

Most of the good fishing I have experienced has been a day or two travel into the park. Anywhere that is easy to get to doesn't seem to hold many fish by comparison, especially brook trout.

I just wish we had more time to fish on this trip. We were too busy trying to stay warm.

Algonquin trout fishing report

My buddy and I had a trip booked for May 7-11 on the north west part of Algonquin Park. After reading the weather report posted online we knew we were going to be in for a rough trip. I contacted plncrzy and asked for a more detailed weather report for the specific area we were heading. His report w...

I would be cautious trying to make your own epoxy / polyester based filler for your transom. Most epoxies give off heat as they cure. And the hotter they get, the faster they cure, which creates more heat, causing it to cure faster and create more heat (vicious circle). Leaving an open plastic conta...

Joes Flies

Has anyone tried lures made by Joes Flies (http://joesflies.com/) ? They look interesting and I would like to try the Short Striker spinner for trout this spring.

Does anyone sell these locally?

Trailhead is the best place to go. You can rent the canoe, life jackets, boat safety kit and all the equipment to safely transport the canoe on your car. The price is reasonable too.
