I thought I might get bored or lonely in the evenings, but I didn't. There are lots of little tasks to do around camp. When those were done I read my book or I just watched the fire. I didn't find traveling alone to be much more difficult either. Paddling was similar, except in the wind. In which ca...

End of season brook trout trip report
Fall brook trout For the third year in a row I fished the closing weekend of trout season in Algonquin park. All three years I have gone to the same area and done the same 3 day trip. My usual paddling partner had work obligations and couldn't join me. Not wanting to miss out on a good trip, I heade...

Imagine jamming a needle into your thumb. Then imagine jamming a fish hook into your thumb past the barb. When you remove the needle and hook, which one do you think will cause more damage? Which one will take longer to remove? I see your point with regards to a fish swallowing a hook or getting gil...

Thank you for the kind comments. Moosebunk: Yes, portaging was limited. Maybe 5km total in 2 weeks? With the heavy 17 foot Royalex tripping canoes and all of our luxuries, we had to triple carry over the portages. Normally you would expect to lose weight on a trip this long, but I think we all gaine...

Barrels are much more waterproof and reduce food smells. Although barrel harnesses have come a long way, they will never be as comfortable as a canoe pack or backpack. So, here is my pick: white water trip: Barrels only. They may have to take a swim down a set of rapids. Flat water trip with little ...

Congrats on the perch! That is a monster! I did a lot of fishing from a paddle boat when I was your age. Your post brings back good memories. Perch are excellent eating. Some of the best there is. Unfortunately they tend to be wormy. They seem to have less worms in some bodies of water then they do ...

When I was a kid I used to fish just upstream from where you were on the Jock. There is a small damn and a set of rapids. I think it is called Hearts Desire. I learned how to fly fish there catching small mouth bass. It is maybe 500 yards upstream from the Rideau. I haven't been there in many years,...

Re: East of The Bay
Another day one of the guys had a pike try to attach his canoe paddle. At least we figure that is what happened. He was the only guy with a white paddle blade. He was just slowly paddling along and there was a huge splash right next to him. I casted in the area it happened and landed a pike just un...

Re: East of The Bay
I am still wondering why both fish were so close together. Is this common? They must have been right on top of each other. I really wish we had taken a picture with both fish side by side. However, in the excitement it never happened. There is an article I have right beside me from spring 2010 Fren...
