Thanks a bunch for this post. I will definitely try this. I had a deep hooked smallie just yesterday that this technique might have worked for. It was a tube jig, so I don't know how well it would fit under the gills, but it would have been worth trying.

Rideau Smallies
I went out on the Rideau this afternoon with the idea of hitting an area I had seen some walleye in last year. I launched about 4:45 and headed to the spot. I scouted the area with my fish finder to get a sense for the bottom contour. The river channel is deep (for the Rideau) and then it rises. The...

It will depend on the lake. If you have a fish finder, you can sometimes see it as a band that appears consistently at a given depth. I'd look for it around 30ft or so, but it can be shallower or deeper, depending on the lake, and the weather. I was at a Muskoka area lake last week and there was no ...

Thanks for the replies. No whitefish in the lake, so that's not a option. I thought about heavier jigs and tubes, but didn't try it because of the water colour. You can't see weeds 5 ft down, so how would fish see a jig/tube 30 ft down? That was my thinking anyway - next time I'll give it a try, tho...

Lucky was a Tri-coloured Collie that I adopted from the Humane Society. He was one special dog. He once had an abcess in his elbow which filled up with fluid and the vet had to poke a hole it it top and bottom and pull a surgical tube through. Lucky just stood there while the vet did that without an...

My biggest smallie
Hi, I typically fish the local Ottawa area rivers, but this past week I was on a lake in the Muskokas, and I caught the largest smallmouth bass I have ever caught. It was 20.5 inches long - sorry but I don't have a scale, and I didn't have my camera with me that time. But it was a beauty. A full 5 i...

How would you fish this lake?
Hi, I have done most of my fishing in rivers in the Ottawa area. This past week I was in the Muskokas fishing a lake where my sister and her husband have a cottage, and I saw info on my electronics that was new to me and I didn't know how to approach it, so I thought I'd ask here for some pointers f...

Looks like I missed Tip-up...
It is great weather. I am getting ready to head out and spent the afternoon and evening on the water. Right now I am thinking of heading up to Centennial Lake. Anyone interested?
I will check back here in an hour or so (12:30) before leaving.

Hi High Noon, Here is a link to a site I found: http://www.cottagedocks.com/costs_001.htm . They have kits that you assemble, or they can assemble them for you (at additional cost). I haven't bought from them so I have no direct experience - I am like you, looking for options. Be aware that the MNR ...

Update - final solution
OK, I followed OTRA's suggestion and hooked up a spare battery to the trailer. All lights worked fine. So I tested the voltage on the plug from the car - all looked good. Then suddenly things changed. I wasn't getting consistent readings. To make a long story short, I replaced the electronic gadget ...

Bonnechere R. at Ottawa R. - How shallow is it?
There is a boat launch I am considering trying on the Bonnechere just above where it meets the Ottawa. My paper charts show the Bonnechere outflow into the Ottawa to be very shallow - less that 3 feet. Anyone know this area? How shallow is it? Does it the Ottawa river level ever get so low that you ...

Thanks to everyone for your sugesstions I think mdej got it, only I think it is the plug on the trailer that's corroded, not the tow vehicle. I keep the tow vehicle plug inside the rear hatch safely tucked away when not in use and it's pretty clean and looks like new, but the trailer plug is exposed...

Any one using Navionics HotMaps?
Do they show other lakes and rivers (shorelines, islands) but without the bathy data, or do you only see the specific water bodies they have the bathy data for? I am interested in the Madawaska River and the lakes along it - Madawaska Lake, Norcan Lake, Black Donald Lake, and Centennial Lake.
