Dave,
I would also suggest you try using circle hooks, which should solve your gut hooking problems.

Re: Calabogie Rainbows!
Nice fish. Depending on the strain of trout that were stocked, they could potentially be 3 y/o fish, given that they're only stocking fingerlings. The Pembroke MNR stocking list also includes a catch report that they ask anglers to complete and submit so that they get a better idea as to how well th...

Re: trout stocking
To improve the quality of trout fishing (soft water) the MNR only needs to look at how BC and MB implemented their trophy lakes. In Manitoba a number of lakes have been designated as "trophy" lakes that have enhanced regulations associated with them (i.e. no ice fishing, artificial lures/f...

Re: fly fishing
Lots of wadable stretches on the Ottawa and Rideau, all within the city. Just be sure you wear the proper wading boots and have a wading staff at a minimum.

Re: brook trout stocking in Ottawa River
The Champlain Trout Run stocks Browns in the Ottawa annually, though they could not source any fish this year. The browns are more tolerant to the warmer water, the the increase in cormorants and the big cats most likely decimate most of the stockers, though second year fish have been caught. Stocki...

Re: Danger Giant Hogweed
Sounds like you ran into some wild parsnip. There's only been one or two reported occurrences of giant hogweed in the region. Wild parsnip on the other hand is just as nasty and is growing pretty much everywhere in the region. The grounds around the RVCA is full of it.

Re: Minster gets grilled on Special Purpose Account
I recall a couple years back that the MNR actually published the breakdown as to how the SPA money was spent within the fish and wildlife program. The key point was that funding for the fish and wildlife programs is provided exclusively by the revenue generated by licenses, tags, etc. That being sai...

Re: Jock River
Basically above the rapids at Greenbank a boat is your best option. Below Greenbank is wading territory; fishing from shore is possible, however you'll lose a lot more tackle than if you wade. Because it is dark bottomed, it looks significantly deeper than it actually is. i've seen anglers chucking ...

Re: Trout rivers near Arnprior?
From what I know Hydes Creek @ Hwy 41 is where the MNR stocks the creek with fingerlings, though I'm not sure if they've been doing fall or spring stockings. If you're interested just give Darwin a shout at the Pembroke MNR office.

Re: Trout rivers near Arnprior?
If you're looking for trout rivers head down to upstate NY. Not only do they have the cold water rivers, they do a great job of stocking/managing them as well.
