I have one in my boat and it seems to keep my deep-cycle battery at around 12V pretty well with almost constant use of the LCD. I don't use my trolling motor that much, but have noticed when I do it takes the solar panel quite a while to get the charge back up to the 12V area. I guess tha major adva...

Thanks for the tips, Bobber and Dartee. Bobber, I haven't had too much luck with deep jigging in the past. so more or less gave up on it. I don't have a bow mount, so pretty much need light winds--something I've not found too often on Big Rideau-- to have any chance of keeping the jig on the bottom....

Skunked on Big Rideau

I've fished Big Rideau three times in the past five days. Caught a single Laker on a J6 Rap at 60 feet in the wind and waves last Friday, a small one on a Williams Warbler at 30 feet on Saturday, and got completely skunked today. Tried all the weapons in my arsenal at depths ranging from 30 to 110 f...

Fall Laker/Splake in District 18

I see from the Regs and Stocking Lists that there might be Fall fishing opportunities for Lakers in SIlver and Loughborough Lakes and for Splake in Indian Lake. I've tried Silver Lake several times in the past without success, and am wondering if it might be worth the drive down from Orleans to Loug...

For Ratsotail 1) Was this a large fish and did it have a fairly large strip of dark or red meat down the lateral line? The muddy tasting ones were about 20" long. The red meat along the lateral line didn't strike me as any wider than I'm used to seeing. 2.) Did you cut off the belly fat? No. 3....

Muddy Tasting Walleye?

Had a good week for Walleye last week at the cottage -- good quantity and good size. Cat and I were excited and looking forward to our first 2008 feast of fresh Walleye. Cooked them up our usual way and took the first bite...what disappointment! The fish tasted muddy. The best way I can describe it ...

Big Rideau report - Snakes at 30 feet!

My son-in-law and I decided to hit Big Rideau today. Bad decision -- wind and waves made trolling in my 14' boat an exercise in frustration. Surface water temp around 12 degrees C. Marked fish at all depths with no recognizable pattern. Tried dragging the balls deep and shallow with various offering...

I think it's what is called a "Fallfish", a large member of the minnow family. I caught a few in Big Cedar Lake a few years ago. Google "Fallfish" and see what you think.

Actually, some trout guys I know (mainly Rainbow/Spec types) would probably be more likely to give up their banking info than revealing their favourite hot spots. All I was hoping to get was the names of some lakes where people had had success -- not the Lat-Long of their hot reef or shoal. I expect...

Ice-out Splake?

I just read an article in Ontario Out of Doors about ice-out Lakers. I know the Laker season around here opens way later than ice-out, but there are a few lakes where the Splake season is open year round. I've fished Lakers (and Splake) in late spring/summer with riggers, but never after ice-out. Ca...

My experience was a little different. Fishing for Lakers in Big Rideau last June with my future son-in-law. Two riggers out, one at 60 feet, the other at 40. Rod on the deep ball started to dance, so I tripped it and felt a fish on. Since it was Jeff's turn, I gave him the rod and started to crank u...

:D Hi Wolfe While I've never actually targeted Muskies on Lower Buckhorn I average one or two a year as "by catch" while fishing for Walleye. I think my largest went around 43", caught on a chartreuse curly tail on 10# test line. I've been broken off by quite few. None so far this yea...

Deer Bay - Lower Buckhorn Lake

I have just returned from spending four weeks at the cottage on Deer Bay of Lower Buckhorn Lake in the Kawarthas. I've cottaged there for going on 20 years now, and the changes in the ecology since the arrival of the Zebra mussels are making fishing more challenging every year. The water clarity kee...

Hi Muskymatt. I must be doing something basically wrong, because I have tried enclosing the URL to the photo in the Image tags, and still not photo appears. If you have the time, I'd appreciate if you'd walk me thru it.
