I agree with Steve, re-do the battery connections so they are tight and clean. Finger tight does exactly what you are describing.

Sounds like the signal from the transducer may be interrupted at times and the demo mode kicks in for a second. The water is a lot warmer than usual this year for the pike opener so the biggun's might have gone deep already.
