Oil draining question?

I have a 75hp Merc 4 stroke and I am just wondering if other 4 stroke owners are making messes when they change there motor oil. Or isthere some kind of adapter that you can buy that fits in the drain plug hole.

Heres what you do Dan...........

1. Remove the Cowling around the Plug

2. Get yourself a piece of cardboard 14'' to 16'' long

3. Next cut and shape the cardboard to fit in and around the area below the drain plug

4. Fold the cardboardin half until somewhat '' V '' shaped, move it away for a second so you can loosen the drain plug .

5.With the drain pan in place push the cardboard tight up against the motor , remove the plug and the oil will run down the cardboard right into the pan

You can always duct tape the cardboard in place , so it doesn't fall off half way through the oil draining

Dan, If you trim up a bit it will always run off the end of the cavitation plate in a predictable manner . Did you change the filter? I find that to be the messiest on some models !

Go to the store

Get 1/4 inch drain plug, one end threaded other end open, about $1.25 at Princess Auto

Get 2 or 3 feet of 1/4 tubing also about $5 at Princess auto

Get a gear clamp, about 25 cents anywhere

assemble

Trim motor up and to the side

Remove drain plug

Screw in new assembly

Drain

Works like a charm and zero mess

I tought you had an Optimax Mr.J. But if that is the size of adapter, I will get one for sure. Thanks.

Seabass I agree that filter is also a messy one to replace, but if you push in a rag just under the filter it'll get all the overflow.

yup I made many a mess changing my own oil before

Now it's so clean I feel bad

Keep in mind that the oil won't drain out as quickly so don't be in a rush

I'll have to look around for where I put it and take a picture for you

If memory serves me the bill was around $6.00

What's helped me is I use a funnel made for filling a radiator and drain it into a plastic kitty litter jug. The drain spout on the coolant funnel is about 1.5" wide with the large opening and capacity of the kitty litter jug, you can't miss.
With my motor I can secure the jug on top of my cavitation plate and the funnel fits snug with no mess.
