I had to buy a new fuel line for a 70 horse merc. I have tried two. the first barely fit in the tank end and the second fits but does not bring the fuel up. it sounds like it is bringing fuel part way up, then when you release the bulb it goes back in the tank. Could this be a faulty fitting?
Or is there yet another line that might work?
The tank fitting looks identical to the old one and it has me stumped.

Yes it is and when you take the line out and push in the end, gas comes out the tank end of the line but does not reach the bulb. I am going to exchange it in case it is faulty.

Check the feed line inside the tank.

I didn't understand your diagnostic.
Test should be:
Disconnect the motor end of the bulb
squeeze and look for gas

Gas comng from the "tank end" when you squeeze suggests the one way valve of the bulb is faulty, as gas shouldn't flow that way.

Extreme test............if you remove the motor conection, you should be able to use the bulb to start syphoning your gas tank.

I've never tried this, but it should work.

I got that workng, but the fuel filter seems to always have air in it. I pump the bulb and the filter fills, but in a while has air in it.
I have looked for a split in the line and changed gas tanks to no avail
the motor runs rough, I changed the plugs and tested the trigger and stator ohms with a meter but I think I need a dva for the meter to read the power pak voltage. Does any one have one to rent for an hour? Norm

Air in the line is not a good sign.
Just to confirm; this is normally a closed system so there should be no air.
If you performed the syphon test, you should see all of the gas come out of your tank without seeing air bubbles in the filter.
If the syphoning stops then the air could be coming from the "open" end of the syphon pipe. This would be normal.

You should be able to confirm all of this at home yourself.
If you confirm no air, then I'd contact JP or Michael and get the motor looked at properly.

GOOD LUCK, let us know if you resolve this.

1. Check the fuel pick up in the tank. If the pick up is old it may be cracked and not holding pressure alowing gas to flow out of the line and back into the tank.
2. Check the seal on the tank pick up. There is a rubber gasket that sits under the fuel gage and may be cracked.

We have seen these issues with new tanks as well.
