Loons, Fawn and a Heron - Photos from the last Few Weeks

Postby JustinHoffman » Sun Jun 30, 2013 12:47 pm

Hello All,

The last few weeks have been fun ones out in the field. On June 10th, I found my first newborn whitetail deer fawn. I'm guessing it was no more than a few days old. Then on June 21st, I discovered my first loon nest while fishing a stretch of the Rideau River. The female was sitting on a single egg, which I imagine has hatched by now, as it was 'pipping' on the 26th.
Here are a few of the best images..

I always really enjoy your pics Justin and these are no exception. Thanks loads for sharing.

Justin, I recently got my first Dslr since losing my old Canon A1 that I hadn't used for ages. Received a Rebel T5i kit and an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS UM zoom lens. I know it's not high end, but I'm hoping to get some quality wildlife photos as I venture afield for some therapeutic me time with a camera instead of a gun.
From the reading I've been doing I realize I've forgotten most of the limited knowledge I had before, let alone using photo editing software. I was hoping you could recommend to me the best place to take a comprehensive photography course locally. Otherwise I think my learning curve will be far too long.Tks

Cheers

Hey Smitty,

Glad you enjoy the images - much appreciated.

As for camera/lens - until I bought my latest Canon 7d this past fall, all of my shots were with a T1i. You will get some great stuff with a T5i and that lens will give you some good reach.

As for courses, I'm afraid I can't help you there. I am self-taught, all through trial and error and from reading books.
I'd recommend picking up this one: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T5i-700D/dp/0321942035

I own the T1i book by the same author, and learned a tonne about the controls of my camera and how to use it.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions - happy to help out.

Cheers,
Justin
