What's the strangest thing you've ever managed to reel in? Or maybe just the event itself was strange
I managed to reel in a 2 lb(I weighed it)...... 6 1/2ft.... fishing pole.(definitely a lunker)
The strange part was, it wasn't together, it was still neatly broken down, ready for transport, and came complete with a 3" wally diver tied on, and attached to the eyelet. How it came to be sitting on the bottom of the river, 20yds. from shore is.....strange.
The strangest event happened while my buddy & I were drifting down the river. We had jigheads on, and were bouncing minnows off the bottom. (actually this happened very near to where I found the fishing pole.......strange)
My buddy had just pulled his minnow up when he felt a tug, then his pole started bending,.....and bending,.....and bending some more,.....then the line started running out,....and running out,...etc.
He said, "I think I'm snagged". I said, "yah....looks like" Then I said, "just cut it off and put a new jig on, we got lot's a minnows". He say's, "NO WAY, that's my lucky jig, I've never been skunked with it".
I'm thinkin, yeah,... right. (fishermen aren't really strange like that......are they?)
Being the nice guy that I am, I reel in my line, start the boat, turn it around, and head back up stream. I go a little past where he's "snagged", hoping it will come free.
His pole is still doubled over, but, he's cranking something in. It comes up so far and....zing...back down it goes. Starts cranking it in again, same thing happens.
He starts a third time, then says,"Hey, .....there's something down there"
I'm thinking, No S#$T, sherlock....it's called a log. (please remember, that I'm still sitting in drivers seat, trying to hold the damn boat in this position)
I turn around and glance at his rod tip, sure enough it does a little song & dance, before plunging back down for a third time.
I'd seen enough, gunned the motor for a second, shut it off, jumped up, tossed the anchor up stream, and tied it off.
I start rummaging around for the net and ask him, "okay, what's it doin now" He says, "it's just laying there" I spy the handle of the net, so I tell him to try bringing it up one more time.
He starts bringing it up once again,....up.....up.....up...twitch,twitch.....zing.
Well...., I'm not driving anymore, the nets beside me, so I relax, and let him do his elevator routine for awhile.....a long while.
I start to wonder why this thing won't run, just up, ....down, .....up, ....down, ...up....etc.
Maybe he's got a real hot date down there....or fishy porno movies..or something (it's amazing what goes through your head when you're bored)
Finally, since I had to be at work for Monday morning, I suggested that he tighten the drag a bit.
After a couple more tries, he reluctantly agreed....and up it came again, ......up, .....up, ....twitch, twitch, ....up, ....twitch, twitch, ....up....up.. (I grabbed the net and leaned over the side)....up...
It had to be close now... the tip was twitching pretty good. .... I looked as it came into view....the most beautiful piece of waterlogged pine I'd ever seen.
I threw down the net and reached over to grab it. At this point, whatever the line had been tangled on the log with, must have broke off.
The next thing I knew, this 6" rock bass whizzed past my ear like a bullet ...straight up in the air.
Have you ever heard a rock bass scream....(I know, you're sayin fish can't talk)...but... I swear, I heard this one.
My buddy lost his balance, stepped backward and sat down hard......on my boom box. (it never boomed again, after that)
The bass continued his skyward journey till,.....he ran out of line, at which point, hs stopped abruptly...grew 3"....then started back down at an even faster rate,...where he collided with the deck, nose first,....shrunk 4", tipped over on his side, and laid there.
After collecting our thoughts...and considering it appropriate, we gathered around, said a few choice words...and buried the little fella at sea.
Since he hadn't been "skunked" again, my buddy put his lucky jig head away, and we continued on our way.
I, however, now get a strange tingling sensation, whenever he digs it out of his tackle box.
STRANGER....than fiction
About a year and a half ago at the Fish-Hawk Return to Pincrest event, I hooked something strange. You see we were fishing for walleye in a pretty hefty current. We were using jigs and minnows. We'd caught a few small ones as most of the Hawk Talkers had. When I felt a huge tug. I set the hook and the battle was on. At first I thought I was snagged, but it was moving. Not only that but from time to time it would pull harder. So now Terry and I were trying to figure out what I had that was so big. Now, understand that JP had caught a sturgeon earlier. That made the most sense 'cause we were in a good current and this was big. We were able to land the great beast and get a picture. I thought about releasing it but I'm ashamed to say that I just couldn't bear to put it back.
I think Caroline at Pinecrest had it mounted.
What do ya think...

Back in the summer of '74 I was working near Chalk River and one night decided to go fishing. There was an old abandoned sawmill on the shores of the small lake I was fishing in. I cast my line near where the conveyor belt for the logs enters the water. As I'm retrieving my spinner something just hammers it! My line starts peeling out at a frantic rate. I try to adjust my drag(difficult to do on my ancient Mitchell reel) to no avail. Suddenly it sufaces. Was that a monster smallmouth?! After a couple more runs the line starts moving towards the shore. What the.......!!! A muskrat exits the water!!! I cut my line and vacate the area. Now that was STRANGE!
I'm a goin' fishin', mama's goin' fishin' and my baby's goin fishin' too.

My buddy, while trolling from a canoe in Algonquin park, actually caught a seagull. he must have beengoing too fast for the sponn because it was on or very close to the surface.
He spotted the gull, circling around and started hauling his line in as fast as he could but the gull swooped down and managed to get the treble hook through one if its nostrils.
Said it was a pretty unique fight, mostly along the water but the bird would get about 10 feet out every so often.
He actually reeled it in, pinned it down and released it.
Hows that for strange. I've also caught two frogs, which have taken a lunge at a small spinner, or a small grub, when Im fishin from shore.

Congrats Steve, that must have been a hell of a fight.SteveC wrote: I thought about releasing it but I'm ashamed to say that I just couldn't bear to put it back.

From the colours, it looks like it's a male.
I understand that they are more rare than muskies,
(I hope you didn't get in too much trouble for not releasing it)

I was jigging for lake trout and snagged a (small) log on the one branch it had and was able to get it to the boat. I was using a 6'6" Medium Heavy Workhorse with a Abu Garcia 5600 reel spooled with 20 lb. test.
Once when I was trolling the same lake for rainbows, I caught 2204 gram (about 4 lb 6 oz.) rainbow, which was huge coming from the tiny lake. When I first hooked it, it fought like a log, just laying on its side and didn't even put up a fight when I got it to the boat. So naturally, I thought that was the problem again. So I reel in and low and behold I have a foot long log at the end of the line, with my jig caught in the joint of the log and the branch!
There had been logging going on around the lake and thats where we figure it came from as it was cleanly cut.
