What was it?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What was it?

Post by frogin1998 »

Had an interesting encounter today along the ottawa river. As i was walking along the shoreline just to check things out, a big splash literally came from the water right in front of shore and something went back into water. Most of the water were still covered in ice but the splash came from a crack of the ice that had open water. I later realized something was resting there and when i spooked it when i walked there. I'm very curious what it could be. Do frogs come out this early, because i used to see big frogs along the shoreline during summer, or was it a fish? I looked into the water and saw a lot of weed. Would it be a pike spawning? All i remember is that i saw a chunk went straight back to the water, it had a smallie type of cooler, darkish brown. My guess it was a pike or a big toad.

The crack and splash reminds me of a beaver... I have had too many of them sneak up on me... Always make me jump like a school girl.

I'm pretty sure it was not a beaver, I've seen beaver go back into water, they flip their body and the tail goes into water last. But the one I saw was kinda like a spooked fish, just have no idea what kind of fish would be out this early. Or maybe you are right
