Ottawa and/or Rideau river temperatures?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ottawa and/or Rideau river temperatures?

Post by Peron »

I keep on meaning to get a thermometer that I can chuck in on the end of a string.

Has anyone taken any temperatures or better yet, knows of a site that posts them online?

Searched a fair bit and I could not find anything but it does not mean they aren't out there. Also, does anyone know what the dandelion rule equates to in water temp for channel cats? I will grow a couple indoors if that will speed things up.

I wouldn't be waiting for dandelions...

That first week of warm weather will get things going. Daytime highs of 12 or so with Sun will wake up the shallows.

What would you be targeting when we get daytime highs of 12?

If cats are not ur thing, Perch should start biting at Vic island soon, there is a small bay near the culvert that holds them at this time of year. Crappies should b turning on soon as well, but I find they bite better at night in early spring so bundle up!

Temps can certainly vary in different parts of the river. On the Rideau the locks warm up first, then creek mouths followed by back bays depending on their orientation to the sun, and then the river proper.
I too considered getting an instant read temp probe, and then I remembered that my DVM came with a thermocouple, so that solves that problem. I'll just need to bring along some string and a kids pail to scoop up some water.
I'm in Smiths Falls daily during the week, so once the river opens up I'll be taking regular readings at Otter Creek and Edmunds lock. I'll report back here when I have news.

Cheers

The only water temperature information that I know of being updated online is the great lakes (including lake ontario).

Might still be useful to track how closely this and the Ottawa river are aligned?

Not sure if people scuba dive in the bigO but maybe call a dive shop. I'm sure they can help you out
