He may not look like much....

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

He may not look like much....

Post by Peron »

But he was important to me. Normally i wouldn't post a picture of such a weenie pike but my last few ice outings have been less than spectacular. Just a few perch last week and yesterday I sat out by myself in the rain on Shirley's bay in the morning figuring that the lack of fisherman would have monster fish jumping on my bait. Not so much... Mental note: ice fishing at 20 below is prefereable to 0 degrees in the rain. I left skunked and depressed since i was not going to be able to get out until Saturday and i am not sure if there will be closed Ice on the shore. So had a chance this am. Two hours with zip other than perch trying to befriend my minnows on the sonar. Punched open an old hole about 10 feet from where one of my lines was so that i could bring my second line close while i packed up my gear... Lines are last right? The minnow didn't even make it to the bottom. Anyways, here is the monster...

Who knows... Maybe i will get out again. Didn't think i would on the hardwater this year when I was getting ready to pack up but a fish always changes everything.

Good call! That was the fattest young pike i have ever had. If you looked at it straight on it had the physique of a walleye. I actually thought it looked like a pre-spawn female but I have never looked up at what age (size) pike start to spawn and if pre-spawn female pike get... Round... I think i will look that up. Pretty sluggish on the line as well.

That's not a pike, it's a sucker!

Ok,ok, slow down you knowledgable angler's and hear me out.

Yes, it may appear to be a pike, fins, colouring, even the mouth full of jagged teeth.

While all those appear very similar to a pike ,this is definitely a sucker.

Here's why:

While you were getting completely drenched, in hopes of your Walter ripping your line off your reel, and merely spent the day feeding perch. when all hope was lost on a season, that you had little precious time to enjoy.

This 'sucker' steps up and sucks you in to keep you going! I hate those guys!! Ok, sort of a love hate relationship really!

Good job! Glad you posted, cause we all have those!

Yup, me too. Last fish of the ice season is great no matter about size or type. Way to leave the hard water buddy. :) LarryB
