Has anybody tried or had any success with Lake Trout after dark or before daylight on the hardwater. I have tried a few times on both ends but not caught any during those periods.

Have tried only a handful of times... never caught a fish. In my experience ice fishing lakers the peak times are usually 10-2pm. Some fish caught shortly before and after.

Re: Lake Trout Action After Dark or Before Daylight
Have never tried ice fishing for lakers at night but I have caught a couple in the summer casting from shore. A cottage I go to has a dock that is within casting distance to a very steep trough. We sometimes cast spoons out there at night while have a few beverages. Have hit a few good ones over the years. So they do feed at night, at least at this lake in the summer.
Probably not too helpful to your situation but there you go... Good luck.

Softwater I have only once caught lakers in total dark, jigging. They were biting, it got dark and they kept on biting.
Haven't tried again but it seemed a fluke at the time. But the bite dies with the sunset while ice fishing.

Wonder if that has something to do with the weather/sun/heat?
In the summer, they prob are more active because the water temps at shallower depths are cooler, so they're more apt to come to the bait?
In the winter, the temps fluctuate much less quickly, so they can feed any old time maybe?

Think lakers are mainly sight feeders, like pike, yellow perch and smallmouth bass, and
you will only catch them at night every other full moon or so.
