A visit to Spectacular to NWT.....

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

A visit to Spectacular to NWT.....

Post by RJ »

It's been a whirlwind 2 months. A mix of work, 14 guide trips and some fun days had kept me busy everyday. It was all leading up to the fishing opportunity of a lifetime.

My buddy Markus called in the winter with an invite from his cousin Cory to join them on Great Slave Lake. No brainer, just tell me when.

The trip lived up to every expectation and then some. New PB's for both Pike and Laker and great times with two buddies.

The monster of a report is on our site at this link: http://www.rjnbirdeesoutdooradventures. ... cular-nwt/

It's a doozy so grab a coffee and enjoy...

Here's a few highlights.

Arriving back in town with an evening to reflect on the trip we left with a couple of noteworthy remarks.

Sure you could go to Plummers or one of the other lodges and be guided all over the lake to their preferred fishing spots their guides have found over the years. We did this on our own and that felt 10 times better than that ever could in our eyes. We were fishing, not catching. Some spots worked, some didn’t. Some baits were hot, some not so much. We pieced it together as a team and but over 200 Lakers over the gunnel and 150 plus Pike in 5 days of fishing.

Another thing we noted was no BS or drama. We all helped out with whatever needed to get done to get us back on the water. We laughed our asses off, had great conversations about our families and just anything and everything that would come up. Just three buddies enjoying themselves in an incredible place with unreal fishing.

2016 is already in the works..... :D

Any trip where an angler like yourself gets to PB's is surely an epic trip of a lifetime, that is until next year of course.

Wow, great trip + report. Congrats on the PB!

I also prefer to find fish in a new spot on my own and I never fished at an outfitter, nor will i ever. Way too expensive and it's much more rewarding when you do the work yourself.
Walleye'm fishing, you're sleeping.

Laker-rich... but the Greyling and the pike stole the show for me.

What are the numbers for that pike?

This trip was without a doubt the best week i've ever spent with friends. 7 straight days of adventure and smiles. The only mistake I made was packing 2 flashlights in my gear bag. The 24 hour sunlight took some getting use to. We had just the perfect amount of gear and the weather cooperated. Getting set up at the campsite or whipping up a meal was as simple as it gets. Moose, Caribou, Elk, were all on the menu and the fresh fish for shore lunch was out of this world.

I've never experienced fishing like that. Sure there's lots of fish, but they dont just jump in the boat. Pike are especially harder to find. You'd think every bay would have some, but that isnt the case. It takes the perfect combination of vegetation, water temps, water depth, food source, ect for them to be there. But when you find them, it's game on.

I think my cousin is in love with jigging now as well....feeling that thud on the line and setting the hook into those fish is a thrill. They fight like they're a 12IN brook trout with a couple extra lbs. lol

Cant say enough good things about this area. I cant wait to go back.

A few more random pics from the week....
