Anyone ever go smelting?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Anyone ever go smelting?

Post by Beermansens »

Just wondering if anyone goes smelt fishing anymore or if they are around these parts? I went maybe 15 years ago when I was a kid near my home town (Georgian bay). We would go out real late with big square nets and lights and catch hundreds. My step dad always said it was legal to net them. Does that still take place? I can remember cutting their head off with scissors and cleaning theirs guts out with my thumb and frying them up. Small town family fun. Delicious though.

When I lived in North Bay years ago .. 20ish .. we used to go smelting every year.
Caught and cleaned them the same way you mentioned.
I think the area we used to go is now a fish sanctuary.
My mom and I were talking about them a couple weeks ago and how tasty they were. :)
