Congrats to Rob Jackson

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Congrats to Rob Jackson

Post by Superdad »

I would like to offer my congrats to Rob who is featured in the article - "The Gars of Spring" in the 2014 OOD Fishing Annual.

Jeff Hoffman wrote a great story about Gar fishing on the Ottawa with Gar expert Rob Jackson ( holder of the current and previous Ontario records for Longnose Gar)

There are lots in Quinte and I have never seen one in all my time fishing there, just have to look in the right places - I guess....

Way to go Guys.

Hey Guys,

I was the one who wrote the article, 'The Gars of Spring', in the Fishing Annual 2014 issue of Ontario Out of Doors. You almost got the name right, Superdad...it's Justin, not Jeff

It was a treat to spend a day with good friend and guide, Rob Jackson, on the Ottawa River last June. As the story illustrates, Rob caught a 51-incher within the first ten minutes (I hadn't even tied up yet!) and he guided me to a 50-inch fish just 30 minutes later.

For those looking to catch their first longnose gar this spring, or would like to chase a trophy, Rob shares some of his secrets and insights on how to get it done. As for a link to the article, it may be put on the OOD website at a later date, but currently is not.

Here is Rob's 51-inch beast just prior to release. This image is used as the opening two-page spread to the article:

The Fishing Annual is packed full of multi-species information and some great images. It should be hitting the newsstands this week.

Good Fishing,

Justin

I'm glad RJ was able to do that article.

I know what its like to have spots "borrowed". borrowing techniques that you have been showed is called learning. borrowing spots that you have been showed is called stealing.

RJ is one of the best at what he does.....catching fish, pure and simple.

fishing is all about learning a new techniques and applying it to your own water/spots.

Great to see both of your hard work being recognized in print.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. It was a blast spending the day with RJ, learning his techniques, picking his brain, and getting some cool images for the magazine. When I came up with the idea for this article, my intention was to share some valuable knowledge with the readers, while giving them another specie to chase in the spring. It was a no-brainer to team up with the current and past Ontario record holder to put this together. Rob is not only a good friend. He is also one heck of an angler.

Again, thanks for the kind comments and I hope you enjoyed the article. It was a fun one to write. My subscriber issue arrived in my mailbox on Monday. Copies should be on the newsstand already....or next week for sure.

Good Fishing,

Justin

Thanks David et Al.

It was a fun day on the water with Justin and the piece/photos he put together is awesome. I think he was a little shell shocked at how fast it all went down. We were done with what we needed by 10 am and the local pub wasn't open yet so we stayed to fish a bit more.
