Crappie Off The List
Crappie Off The List
I had never caught a crappie before and I wasn't looking for size or any keepers, I just wanted to cross that species from my list.
Having also never fished crappie bay at Petrie island, I figured what better place to try for crappie than at the bay named after them.
Maybe seeing fisherguy33's report from a couple of days ago had something to do with it as well.
Tuesday morning I headed out for a solo mission and after catching a few perch I moved to an area that was littered with previous holes that had frozen over.
I thought something was wrong with my flasher or thought I might be sitting over an underwater tree since my flasher was lit up almost from top to bottom... that is until the "tree" started moving!
No more than 10 minutes in... *drum roll* ...My first ever crappie!
Oddly enough, even with all the fish I was marking, the bite was sort of slow.
I did manage to catch a few more with some of these guys mixed in.
Now I do have a question... Some people say this is a sunfish, which it is, but what kind of sunfish?
I believe this might be a bluegill but others tell me it's a pumpkinseed. Anyone know for sure?
Something I learned on this trip out... A flasher can help you mark fish but that doesn't mean they'll bite.
BTW, all my fish were caught on a super small white Rapala jigging rap tipped with various small Gulp baits.
This was the biggest crappie of the day.
Every fish caught was put back for someone else to catch.
Next on the list... TROUT!

I thought it might have been a pale pumpkinseed but I guess that makes more sense... and what are you tryin' to say there Yannick?! lolfisherguy33 wrote:Black dot (blue dot) on the gill=bluegill. ...Hope you get some big ones soon.

Re: Crappie Off The List
Congrats on the crappie. Something I noticed when using the Camera and flasher simultaneously is that some of those "fish" you're marking may be ridiculously small, particularly if they come screaming in for a look but wont bite.fiiish wrote:IOddly enough, even with all the fish I was marking, the bite was sort of slow.... At least on my low-end FL-8
There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.
