Fishin' With My Dad Report

My dad, who is almost 70, hadn't fished since my mom passed away from cancer in '95.
Since I now own a boat, I asked my dad if he would like to come fishing with me. He was very excited and we set a date.

About a month ago I took him out locally to the Ottawa river for some bass, pike or anything that would bite.
It's all unknown waters for me and he'd never fished with lures before so I knew it might be a bit tough.
In 5 hours we landed 2 fish. A LM bass for me and a rock bass for my dad.
At the end of the day it was great to fish with my dad and fun was had but so little production left me unsatisfied.
I told my dad we'd have to do it again soon but somewhere different.

Last Monday we went to a lake near Clayton.
It didn't turn out to be as productive as my previous trips there.
The morning was nice but by lunchtime it was extremely hot and the wind had picked up. By early afternoon the bite had turned off completely.
Still we landed about 10 fish and lost half a dozen at the boat in about 6 hours fishing time.
It was much better than our first outing and not bad for an old guy who had fished with lures only 1 time previously.
It feels great to have done this with my dad and I hope to do it more often.
Maybe I'll get him to try ice fishing but I'll leave that for a different report. ;)

Here are a few pics...

Thanks for the report, nice to see the fun you guys had...I used to fish with my dad as a kid all the time, how we lose track. I believe I have a phone call to make.

Great pics 8)

That's good stuff right there. Thanks for sharing. My Dad is still the first person I call when I get home when I stick a good one that day.

And good on your dad for wanting to try something new ... my father is a creature of habit ... he and his buddies always fished for trout trolling red devils and worms ... all he's ever done all he will ever do ... if I could just get him to hook into a 3 lb bass then I think he'd be pretty anxious for the next cast ... and trip.

I think its not only great that you took the time to get your father out there, but that you keep at it. A very nice report! Hope you can continue this and you'll have some more great memories of time spent together. I miss those outings with my own dad.

(That's a nice bass you boated, by the way!)

Good job guys.

I'm guessing your Dad was just as happy on the first outing as he was on this one.....

Ditto...a fishless day with your dad is better than a 100 fish day without him

Do it as often as you can. I did.
