2 Nickles in the Piggy Bank (videos included)

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

2 Nickles in the Piggy Bank (videos included)

Post by bl8ant »

Years have passed during which I have been trying diligently to crack the nickle mark and on a recent trip to a new lake it took all of 3 hours.

The sun had just risen—fog was still lingering over the lake's surface and I could still taste the first coffee of the day when it happened...I clipped my brand new rod and reel while lowering the trolling motor, sending it directly to the bottom of the weed choked, tea stained water. This was not going to be a good day. Or was it?

The surface activity on the lake distracted me from the mishap earlier and by the time I had landed a few bass the lost rod was a distant memory. 3 hours in and 7-8 chunky bass later my spro frog was sucked under leaving only a whirlpool as evidence. I reeled down, set the hook and squealed "GET THE NET" like a schoolgirl as the behemoth became airborne for the first of two acrobatic displays.
My girlfriend netted it like a pro and directly to the livewell it went to be weighed, photographed and released.
5lbs 12 ounces

My trip was officially a success, I had landed my personal best hours in to my trip. Getting anything bigger than this beast would be a long shot but I had achieved my goal and I was content to say the least. As the day progressed so many quality fish made there way in to the boat that I didn't even weight this hog that fell victim to a zara spook in the evening.

Life couldn't get any better than this...until the next day of course.

Never willing to be outdone my girlfriend's personal best was just a cast away. I edged up quietly to a section of bank that had produce a monstrous hit the day before and she cast her frog accurately to the steep sloping rock right where it met the edge of the reeds. A couple of twitches of the rod tip and the frog was sucked under with purpose by another monstrous bass. A brief struggle ensued and the fish was boated and tossed in the livewell, both of us in disbelief over it's absurd proportions.

Could it be that we break 6? It surely seemed possible but the scale told us different registering her at the next closest increment; 5lbs 15 and 3/4 ounces. I grabbed a rod rigged with a 1/4 oz bullet weight to show her how close this fish was to that mark!

I thought we might have landed our third nickle in 2 days when I boated this beauty but the berkley digital brought me back down to reality when it registered a solid 4lbs 8 ounces.

After only 2 days of fishing at this lake I had to leave for my second cottage at Pointe au Baril on Georgian bay. It was some of the toughest 2 days of largemouth fishing I have ever had but the first part of the vacation made up for that and more!

Great report. Cong on the 2 PBs.

I feel your pain about the lost rod. I still have a faint hope of getting mine back. I hope you do to.

Wow. The video makes one appreciate the size of that fish.
Cool stuff.

Congrats

Those are some real nice fish.
