St. Lawrence River - July 15, 2010
Having herd reports of less than stellar fishing on the river, I was a bit concerned about what kind of day I would have.
As I was preparing to leave the dock, I realized that regardless of how the fishing was, my day was starting out a whole lot better than the owner of this boat
One thing about fishing the St. Lawrence, you do have to share the river
I decided to see if I could find a walleye or two to invite to supper before I got serious about the bass fishing. After several passes, all I could come up with was a few smallies.....as well as an almost constant tap tap tap of gobies.
With the abnormally hot weather and water temps I decided to forgo my usual smallie starting spot for a slightly different starting point.
My decission was on the money, producing several fish every drift. Nothing huge caught, but I was on fish like this all day.
After movig to another spot I thought I'd give my Flat Rap a work-out. I was snapping the Flat Rap back to the boat and this huge smallie shot out of the grass and was going to bust my bait.....until I decided I could time the strike and set the hook. Didn't work, not at all. Pulled the bait away from the fish...the fish just does a 180 and charges the bait.......yes......I did it twice. How stupid is that?
How stupid is asking a question like that on Fish-Hawk
During the day I had this plane fly by. Huge plane. It was flying a lot lower than one would expect a plane of that size to be flying and it seemed to be following the river.

Great Report Steve!!
Nice smallies. The topwater miss - I know all about it - easy to do. Sometimes I think they hit it with their mouth closed...
The plane looks like a C17 Globemaster - Canada is flying these out of Trenton (designated CC-177). One of our CC-177's was around Ottawa yesterday... also over water.

It's hard to curtail the impulse to SET THAT HOOK NOWWW !!! Plenty guilty of that, especially when using Scum Frogs...I just can't wait 3 whole seconds!
Anyway, YOUR boat is afloat, looks like a beautiful day on the river and you boated some bronzies. Can't beat that. And you know where that lunker lives...

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

yep........most came from 30-35 FOW.....although the biggest fish I saw was in about 3 FOW hiding in the grass. 4-5in grubs on the D/S with a shortish drop line seemed to work the best.bl8ant wrote:Good job on those smallies, you getting 'em deep?
All the bass I caught were fat chunks like those. The bass were definatly feeding. The Torpedo wrote:Nice fish! that one is like a football!
Yes, I did see about a doz dead smallies. All seemed about 12in long, nothing big that I saw.crankbait58 wrote:Nice ones DS! Did you come across any of the floaters that everyone is talking about?
Thanks Luke, I was working on the MEAP....or modified extended arm pose on that picfatluke wrote: You really need to figure out the EAP though. Be sure to tuck your elbows in behind the fish!!
Although with my regular EAP I do see what you mean about tucking in the elbow. That's what I love about Fish-Hawk, people helping people.
