Slammin some salmon

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Slammin some salmon

Post by Mike P »

I was suppose to get out last week to try the salmon action. Plans changed though-out the week and we couldn't make it down. So for the past few days this B.C boy has had some serious salmon withdraw's!
Worked out the time to go with a few friends yesturday. We left the Ottawa area at midnight. Arrived at Lake O around 3am after a few coffee breaks. Launch about 4am with great weather looking upon us. We start setting down lines running them on rigger's, wire and dipsy's & leadcore. Trolled around for about 3 hours with-out anything.
Started to hope that this was not going to be one of those trips of 3hr drive, 10 hr fish with-out a strike. Thankfully that was not the case. After changing set-ups many times we finally started to see some results.
First up was this rainbow. This came as quite the surprise after trolling for three hours. the three of us heard the clicker going off but for a second we all just looked at each other in disbelief. I made it to the rod first and was rewarded with this 11lbs rainbow. Beauty fish, but we came for salmon.

Next I'm setting lines with a new lure and it goes off. Hook set and pass the rod to my friend. He get's the fish to the boat and we can see it's a salmon but this one does not make the boat and get's off.
I set the lines again and same thing happens. This time no chance to pass the rod. This is a strong fish pulling out everything to get away. Almost at the end of my reel this fish stops and start's to head back to the boat. A few minute's of fighting and some Hail Mary's, this fish is netted. Go to lift the salmon into the boat, and the net breaks.

We did mange to hook into a few more this day but I never got to try out my half a net tecnique on them. Weather really started to pick up with lot's of wind and rain and we called it a day.
Hopefully this salmon fit's into the smoker better than it fit's in the cooler.
Salmon=27lbs
Rainbow=11lbs

Hopefully can better this trip come this Friday!

Great looking Salmon Mike, looks like a great day. Will have to join you next week to give them a try. You will have to borrow my huge cooler. Those things don't fit into that tiny one you got there!!

Those fish get so big it's ridiculous. The battle to land them must be extraordinary. They look mega powerful.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
