Smelts

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Any one know where I can catch some smelts close to Ottawa? I have never gone before, and would like to try.

I've never heard of Smelt fishing possibilties 'close' to Ottawa and I'm even more curious to find out if Do-as-you-want-to actually has a Metro now? ....Hooker?

Muskrat Lake has a healthy rainbow smelt population. I don't know if people catch them during soft water season but there are lots of people who fish for them through the ice.

It depends what you consider "close"... 31-mile lake has some in it. But that is over an hour away (more like closer to 2 hours)

Sault Ste Marie :(

I miss the smelt fishing up North, man did they taste good fresh!

Hey Farm Boy does carry Lake Superior Smelts every now and then and they are not too bad.

Nothing around this area unfortunately.

If you find a creek where you can dip a net and catch a small pail PM me.

Good Luck on your quest

Isn't there a smelt run every year or something similar to that at Carillon?

It's interesting some types of fish at wanted more than others, smelts are like big minnows basically, I know a few creeks around here with minnows year round lol. Smoke em if you like. Fallfish are year round, I bet they'd taste just like smelt lol .......

Personally I haven't ate smelt prepared properly or I wouldn't be teasing ya.

But really dip a net in some of the creeks/ditches in the countryside and you'd be surprised what types of fish you'd find just in agricultural ditches and stuff......ones with clean cold groundwater of course
