Spring fishing

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Slop, those stump strung omble de fontaine were caught the day after opener. Ice still covered the majority of small lakes and ponds in the area. I have to agree with ya about those bugs, they sure are wicked hungry and will keep me on the river once they show themselves in full force

Let's not go there Maple..

For me the last few years I have headed down to Erie the first weekend in May to slam some big smallies. New York has an early season for them (as well it's open year round for catch and release) and the fishing is usually pretty good. There's nothing like catching 4 and 5 lb smallies in May (LEGALLY), it holds me over until June when the season opens here.

1st sat in may baby! Bay of Quinte. There are tons of spots to fish, last year I managed an 8 pounder followed by my P.B. of 10lbs. (Lost one even bigger shortley after)

Those are speckled trout. Quebec Reds are landlocked arctic char.

I appreciate the info Maple....but you're most likely not aware that last year there was a very.....uh....in-depth discussion (argument) in here about Quebec Red trout. There were some very clear lines drawn in the sand, and as Tip-up has eluded to, we don't need to travel that road again.

I'm going to have a small 12' aluminum, with a 10hp, does the BOQ get choppy?

Where should I look for those early season walleye?

BOQ gets very choppy.
Had more than a few scares in the 12 footer. It is do-able, but check, and double check the wind forecast and do not stray too far from the launch. The conditions can turn from good to bad in minutes.

As for early season walleye, (dependent upon the timing of the spawn), I would stick to spawning grounds. (River mouths, rockpiles, etc.)

Be very respectfull of mother nature if you are venturing in a 12 footer.

NS for specks in May and SK for walleye and whites in Jun. Not sure if I'll make it out for slabs before that or not...based on past years - probably not.
There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.

BOQ can go from flat calm to 3 foot waves in 20 minutes (depending on where you are of course). The nice part is there is almost always somewhere you can go there that will be sheltered

thanks for the heads-up everyone. Guess BOQ is out of the question for now.

Any other nice (calm) lakes with good early season walleye's? 2-3 hours from Ottawa is ok....

Considering that Zone 15 walleye season doesn't open till the 3rd Saturday in May, you'll be missing over a month of early season fishing if you're going to target only eyes.
