Black Bass
Black Bass
Just curious, has any one heard the term Black Bass? I'm sure most have. Coming from Chatham Ontario I fished with my dad at Rondeau Bay and Erieu, good bass fishing back in the 60's. My Dad use to say lets go get some Black Bass even to this day he calls them Black Bass. I call them LM, SM or Bronze backs. Does the term Black Bass come from the coulor of the fish as Bronze Backs do?
Just curious

Common
Both largemouth and smallmouth are called black bass to differentiate them from white bass, rock bass, yellow bass, etc. The name goes back at least 100 years and is common throughout North America.
The term has nothing to do with individual specimens that may have more dark pigmentation than normal.

Re..
It's just a nickname. People use it for LM & SM to distinguish them from rock bass, white bass, striped bass like CCB said.
What I don't understand is local people here call smallies "Green Bass", but if they're basing it on color, wouldn't largemouth be the "greener" of the species?? Most smallies I catch are brown!

Hmmm...
wolfe- "some older folk"- Thanks!
BBR- many years ago- before you were even born; I'm talking way, way back when the leafs used to win the odd cup; I was talking to an old retired guide (he'd be about 115 now, I guess) about bass locations in a certain lake. He replied- "All depends. Is you after the browns or the greens?"
To him smallies were browns and largemouth were greens.

It's true, Markus; I guess there is some variation or else we are all color blind!
Most of the S/M I boat in Wolfe are that nice bronze-ish, hence their nickname. Once in a while, I'll get one with that wild, dark "marbling" and they are really good looking. Never caught a greenish one. Like Big Bass Rich, I'd say the L/M I've caught are more of a greenish cast. (Is "greenish" even a word?! It suddenly looks ridiculous in print and I've used the word several times in this post!!!!)

Hmmm...
Markus- here's what smallies are supposed to look like:
Are you any where near a nuclear plant, perhaps?
Or maybe just the bigger fish (as found in this area) are brown?
