Talk to me about trout fishing.

Hi everyone. Finally the weather is starting to get warm

I'd like to go trout fishing during this spring season. I've been reading the best time is around april-June when the water is still cold and trouts are active.
I'd like to fish streams and small rivers. I live in Ottawa and the only place I know for trout fishing is Algonquin park (I've been there twice in last July).

So my questions are:
1) Is the season open for trout?
2) Can I go to Algonquin park in a week or 2? Are the rivers/creeks still covered with ice?
3) Anyone recommend any rivers/streams in there?

trout season opens the 2nd last weekend in april in the park, you may want to wait until then, the oxtongue river runs through the whole park and is full of rainbows and specks but there are lots of lakes with trout within the park as well.............there may still be ice on the lakes for the opener so you may want to call the park for updates before you venture up............

Might not hurt to pick up a copy of the regulations. You can get them where you bought your lisense.

There are no producing trout streams in this region - you'll have to hit the tributaries of the great lakes or upper state New York.

I'd like to fish rivers and creeks since I don't feel like pedaling in cold weather

I'd definitely check the Oxtongue river. Any other tips? Anyone got pics of trout fishing in there?

I'm not trying to be a weisenheimer, but I think the park opens the last week in April, not the 2nd last....so it's more like 4 weeks away

2008 regs Zone 15:

Brook Trout* Jan. 1 to Sept. 30
Brown Trout* Open all year
Rainbow Trout* Open all year
Lake Trout* Jan. 1 to Sept. 30

Exception for Algonquin Park -- Fish sanctuary - no fishing from Jan. 1 - Fri. before 4th Sat. in Apr. & Dec. 1 - Dec. 31.



Zone 18:

Brook Trout* Open all year
Brown Trout* Open all year
Rainbow Trout* Open all year
Lake Trout* 4th Sat. in May to Sept. 8 C -1

was just up at the cottage on the weekend and hit a couple lakes. There is still 2 feet of ice on em. It will have to get pretty warm for open water in 2 weeks.

Let's not forget about Quebec .... the other side of the river.

There are quite a few nice spots for trout in creeks over there.

Better have a good blackfly deterant though... that's probably why there is so little pressure on those trout.

Your right Seaweed...I have fished a few and did well between Ladysmith and Shawville for brookies a few years ago...Are the pools easy to get too? Ya right There are actually quite a few closer to find as well if you put a little time into looking for them.

Trout opened here today and that's no April Fool's joke! It's a great spring sight to see the creek peppered with trout fishermen again. The water's high and moving along. Today's freakish weather has the temp's already in the 60'sF and I can't think of a nicer way to kick in April.

I'm hoping to get our kids out to Spafford/Nine Mile Creek soon for a chance at those pretty fish, as inexperienced as we are at fishing this way. It's always a nice experience even if we don't catch any.

The state fisheries are in the process of stocking thousands of trout into our local systems at this time!

Where is this Spafford/Nine Mile Creek that you speak of?

If you live in Ottawa just go down to the Ottawa River and try there. There's trout in there.
