Fishhawk & Bobber hit Norcan Lake

Well the day finally came and went.

Fishhawk and I had a heated debate as to where we were going to go for this year's Bass Opener, so we decided to hold a lottery to make the decision for us.

Each of us chose 3 bodies of water that we'd like to go to, put them all in a hat, and had the plan of eliminating water bodies by choosing from that hat. To come up with the bodies of water, we each had about 5 minutes to think about it, or at least until we finished off a pint (whichever came first).

The bodies of water included....
- White Lake
- Adams Lake
- Christie Lake
- Norcan Lake
- Newboro Lake
- (I forget the last one, the pints may have had something to do with it.)

One by one we chose from the hat...each choice disappointing us, as we'd really like to go to all of these, however in the end, Norcan Lake won it over all the rest.

We left at 4:00am, (what were we thinking?) and got up to Calabogie and launched by 6:00. It was surprisingly cold at 6:00am in the morning, with winds out of the Northwest, and a dampness that would put chills through anyone's bones. I was certainly glad I brought my winter coat......imagine....winter coat on Bass season opener. Who'd a lunk it?

Anyway, despite the coldness, we had a great day, caught a large number of bass, some spots producing more than others, and figured out the pattern that was working best. Sticking to that pattern continued to produce fish for us, nothing of any great size, but we were still catching fish.

Not too much traffic on the Lake, with only a few boats here and there, some catching a few small ones, and others puzzled as to why there were no fish to be found in their boats. A couple stopped by and asked us what we were doing, so we gave some tips on what was working for us, and off they went. I hope their day picked up.

A great season opener for sure, and I already can't wait until the next time. Here are a few pics of the day....

A little cold this morning, but a big bellied Largemouth!

Warming up a little as the sun rises.

Now that's one hunk of wood down there!

Look at me! Am I having fun or what?

Norcan Lake is a beautiful spot, with lots of stumps and fallen wood around the shoreline. Areas that produced the best were 2 to 3 feet of water close to the main body along the shorelines. Several coves gave you shallow water with dead heads and grassy flats, but they didn't produce for us this day. I'd like to got back there when it warms up though, I'm sure the largies would make their way into these bays and pulling them out of the wood, would definately make fishing Norcan even more challenging than it was.

Congratulations, nice specimens.

I don't know about the rest of you, but Bass Opener is like Christmas for me! ^_^ Whilst I haven't gotten out yet, it's great to see that others got some good fishin' in.

Now that is a GREAT way to start the Bass Season! Nice hogs for sure. It hard to believe that the weather jumps from one extreme to the other in just a matter of days, pretty hard to know what to wear but I always say, "perpare for the worse and hope for the best." Nice job!!!

I've heard of Norcan, but never fished it. I think you guys made a good choice. Other than the cold, I'd say you had a successful day. Those are some respectable bass!

How much HP is that motor guys :?:

It's a 90HP Merc. Works great, but I think we need to prop up a size. We have a 17" prop on there now I think it could use a bigger one. We seem to be running high on RPM. Might consider it to see how it changes the performance.

Moosbunk, Adam's lake was a choice that Fishhawk put in there. I haven't fished it, but he said he did pretty good in a tournament a couple years ago. We may still visit it to see how's it is this year, but then again....so many lakes....so little time.

We fish this lake every September. Love the wood. The bigger fish often are out in the grass, but its so fun back in the wood.
